Böldieke maintains that the eternal torments of the damned spring from pure benevolence in the Deity, because the happiness of the elect will be so greatly heightened and intensified by the contemplation of their sufferings! The sum of happiness in the universe thus becomes greater than could be produced in any other way. It is but fair to state that he regards the number of the elect as immensely larger than that of the reprobate.
