2. Not one of all that heavenly host
Could such high notes attain;
But spirits from a distant coast
United in the strain :

Till he who first began the song,
To sing alone not suffer'd long,
Was mingled in a countless throng.
3 And still as hours are fleeting by,
The angels ever bear

Some newly-ransom'd soul on high,
To join the chorus there.

And still the song will louder grow,
Till all the saved by Christ below
To that fair world of rapture go.

4 O, give me, Lord, my golden harp,
And tune my broken voice,
That I may sing of troubles sharp,
Exchanged for endless joys:
The song that ne'er was heard before
A sinner reach'd the heavenly shore,
Shall now be sung for evermore!

YES

6-88.

VES, there are little ones in heaven,
Just such as we, around the throne,
To whom the King of kings has given
Eternal glory like His own:

Jesus! Thy mercy, rich and free,
Has suffer'd them to come to Thee.

2 O let us think of them to-day

Their sweet and everlasting song,
And hope to sing as loud as they
In the same glorious heaven ere long:
Jesus! may this our portion be-
O suffer us to come to Thee!

3 To come with humbleness of mind,
With simple faith, and earnest prayer,
To seek Thy precious cross, and find
Peace-safety-joy-salvation there.
O set our sin-bound spirits free,
And suffer us to come to Thee!
4 To come while we are young and gay,
While life, and joy, and hope run high;
To come in sorrow's gloomiest day,

To come at last, when death is nigh.
Lord in that day our Guardian be,
And suffer us to come to Thee.

THE SACRAMENTS.

Baptism.

L. M.

141.

1 MWAS the commission of our Lord,
"Go, teach the nations and baptize;"

The nations have received the word
Since He ascended to the skies.

2 He sits upon the' eternal hills,

With grace and pardon in His hands, And sends His covenant with the seals To bless the distant heathen lands. 3 "Repent, and be baptized," He saith, "For the remission of your sins;" And thus our sense assists our faith, And shows us what His Gospel means. 4 Our souls He washes in His blood, As water, makes the body clean; And the good Spirit from our God Descends like purifying rain.

5 Thus we engage ourselves to Thee,
And seal our covenant with the Lord;
O may the great eternal Three,

In heaven our solemn vows record!

The Lord's Supper.

C. M.

Tall stand for ever good;
HE promise of My Father's love,

He said; and gave His soul to death,
And seal'd the grace with blood.
2 To this sure covenant of Thy word
I set my worthless name;

I seal the engagement to my Lord,
And make my humble claim.

3 Thy light, and strength, and pard'ning grace, And glory shall be mine:

My life and soul, my heart and flesh,
And all my powers are Thine.

4 I call that legacy my own,

Which Jesus did bequeath;

'T was purchased with a dying groan,
And ratified in death.

5 Sweet is the memory of His name,
Who blest us in His Will,

And to His Testament of love
Made His own life the seal.

SECTION XIV.

THE SABBATH AND SCHOOL.

C. M.

Lord of Sabbath let us praise,
In concert with the blest,

1

THE

Who, joyful, in harmonious lays
Employ an endless rest.

2 Thus, Lord, while we remember Thee,
We blest and pious grow;

By hymns of praise we learn to be
Triumphant here below.

3 On this glad day a brighter scene
Of glory was display'd,

By God, the' eternal Word, than when
This universe was made.

4 HE RISES, who mankind has bought
With grief and pain extreme :

1

'Twas great to speak a world from nought; 'Twas greater to redeem !

C. M.

ARLY, my God, without delay,
I haste to seek Thy face;

My thirsty spirit faints away,
Without Thy cheering grace.

2 So pilgrims on the scorching sand,
Beneath a burning sky,

Long for a cooling stream at hand;
And they must drink, or die.

144.

3 I've seen Thy glory and Thy power
Through all Thy temple shine;
My God, repeat that heavenly hour,
That vision so divine!

4 Not life itself, with all its joys,
Can my best passions move,
Or raise so high my cheerful voice,
As Thy forgiving love.

5 Thus till my last expiring day
I'll bless my God and King;
Thus will I lift my hands to pray,
And tune my lips to sing.

[blocks in formation]

COME, let us join, with one accord,

In hymns around the throne;
This is the day our rising Lord
Hath made and call'd His own.

2 This is the day which God hath bless'd,
The brightest of the seven,
Type of that everlasting rest
The saints enjoy in heaven.

3 Then let us in His name sing on,
And hasten to that day,

When our Redeemer shall come down,
And shadows pass away.

4 Not one, but all our days below
Let us in hymns employ;
And, in our Lord rejoicing, go
To His eternal joy.

P. M.

COME, come away!
From labour now reposing;

No week-day care Our thoughts may share,
O come, come away!

Come, come our Sabbath joys renew,
Our eyes shall beam with gladness true,
Our hearts beat warmly too,

O come, come away!

O come, come away!

The Saviour is entreating,

He bids us come, He calls us home,
O come, come away!

We'll listen to His gentle voice,
And make His easy yoke our choice,
And in His love rejoice,

O come, come away!
