Help, ye bright, angelic spirits!
Bring your sweetest, noblest lays;
Help to sing our Saviour's merits;
Help to chant Immanuel's praise !

THE LORD JESUS CHRIST: HIS OFFICES.

C. M.

OSANNA! raise the pealing hymn
To David's Son and Lord;

With cherubim and seraphim
Exalt the Incarnate Word.
2 Hosanna! Lord, our feeble tongue
No lofty strains can raise ;
But Thou wilt not despise the young,
Who meekly chant Thy praise.

3 Hosanna! Sovereign, Prophet, Priest,
How vast Thy gifts-how free!

40.

Thy death, our life; Thy word, our feast;
Thy Name, our only plea.

4 Hosanna! Master, lo! we bring

Our offerings to Thy Throne;

Not gold, nor myrrh, nor earthly thing,
But hearts to be Thine own.

5 Hosanna! once Thy gracious ear
Approved a lisping throng;

Be gracious still, and deign to hear
Our poor but grateful song.
6 O Saviour! if, redeemed by Thee,
Thy temple we behold,
Hosannas through eternity
We'll sing to harps of gold.

PROPHET on earth bestow'd,

A Teacher sent from God

Thee we welcome from above,
Sent the Father to reveal,
Sent to manifest His love,
Sent to teach His perfect will.

Thy cheering beams we bless,
Bright Sun of Righteousness!
Life and immortality

Thou alone to light hast brought;
Bid the new creation be,

Call'd the world of grace from nought.

For this the heavenly Dove

Descended from above;

He, immeasurably shed,

Christ the Prophet, mark'd and seal'd; Pour'd upon Thy sacred Head

Thee the' anointing Spirit fill'd

WITH joy we meditate the grace
Of our High Priest above;

His heart is made of tenderness,
His bowels yearn with love.

2 Touch'd with a sympathy within,
He knows our feeble frame;

He knows what sore temptations mean,
For He hath felt the same.

3 He in the days of feeble flesh
Pour'd out His cries and tears;
And, though exalted, feels afresh
What every member bears.

4 He'll never quench the smoking flax,
But raise it to a flame;

The bruised reed He never breaks,
Nor scorns the meanest name.

5 Then let our humble faith address
His mercy and His power:
We shall obtain delivering grace
In the distressing hour.

EJOICE, the Lord is King!
Your Lord and King adore;
Mortals give thanks and sing,
And triumph evermore :

43.

Lift up your heart, lift up your voice;
Rejoice, again I say, rejoice!

Jesus the Saviour reigns,

The God of truth and love;
When He had purged our stains,
He took His seat above:

Lift up your heart, lift up your voice;
Rejoice, again I say, rejoice!

His kingdom cannot fail;

He rules o'er earth and heaven;
The keys of death and hell

Are to our Jesus given:

Lift up your heart, lift up your voice;
Rejoice, again I say, rejoice!

He sits at God's right hand,
Till all His foes submit,
And bow to His command,

And fall beneath His feet:

Lift up your heart, lift up your voice;
Rejoice, again I say, rejoice.

very Paschal Lamb, Whose blood for us was'shed,

44.

Through whom we out of Egypt came,

Thy ransom'd people lead.

2 Angel of gospel grace,
Fulfil Thy character:

To guard and feed the chosen race,
In Israel's camp appear.

3 Throughout the desert way,
Conduct us by Thy light;
Be Thou a cooling cloud by day,
A cheering fire by night.
4 Our fainting souls sustain
With blessings from above;
And ever on Thy people rain
The manna of Thy love.

1 EE the kind Shepherd, Jesus, stands, and calls His sheep by name;

Gathers the feeble in His arms,
And feeds each tender lamb.

2 He'll lead us to the heavenly streams
Where living waters flow,

And guide us to the fruitful fields
Where trees of knowledge grow.

3 When, wand'ring from the fold, we leave
The strait and narrow way,
Our faithful Shepherd still is near
To guide us when we stray.

4 The feeblest lamb amidst the flock
Shall be the Shepherd's care:
While folded in our Saviour's arms,
We're safe from ev'ry snare.

[blocks in formation]

SAVIOUR, like a shepherd, lead us;
Much we need Thy tenderest care;

1

In Thy pleasant pastures feed us,
For our use Thy fold prepare:
Blessed Jesus,

Thou hast bought us, Thine we are!
2 Thou hast promised to receive us,
Poor and sinful though we be :
Thou hast mercy to relieve us,
Grace to cleanse, and power to free:
Blessed Jesus,

Early let us turn to Thee!

3 Early let us seek Thy favour,
Early let us do Thy will;
Blessed Lord and only Saviour,
With Thy joy our bosoms fill:
Blessed Jesus,

Thou hast loved us; love us still!

SECTION III.

GOD THE HOLY GHOST.

86, 86, 8 8.

LET songs of praises fill the sky!

Christ, our ascended Lord,
Sends down His Spirit from on high,
According to His word:

All hail the day of Pentecost,

The coming of the Holy Ghost!

2 The Spirit, by His heavenly breath,
New life creates within;

He quickens sinners from the death
Of trespasses and sin:

All hail, &c.

The things of Christ the Spirit takes,
And shows them unto men;
