PREFACE. 66 THIS selection of hymns suitable for use in Day and Sunday schools has been made by a number of Ministers, at the request of the Wesleyan Methodist Book Committee. It embraces a wide range of topics connected with our most holy faith," all of which are treated in a manner agreeable to the teaching of the Sacred Oracles. Some modern pieces of excellence have been incorporated with the best of the hymns already used in Methodist schools; and the whole forms a collection which the compilers believe will be found calculated to promote habits of piety, as well as a knowledge of Divine Truth, in the lambs of the flock of Christ. Important aid in ascertaining details respecting copyrights, and in furnishing correct copies of hymns, has been cheerfully afforded by the Revds. Messrs. Frederic Greeves and Samuel Lees; and by Mr. William Sugden, B.A., of the Wesleyan Training Institution at Westminster. The extensive and accurate knowledge of hymnology possessed by the gentleman last named has been at all times kindly placed at the Editor's disposal. London, January 3, 1870. IX.
