PREFACE.

THE objects which I have kept in view in preparing this edition of the Second Book of Horace's Odes have been already stated in the Introduction to my edition of the First Book, and it is unnecessary to repeat them here.

I propose to publish in due course similar editions of the two remaining Books and, ultimately, the whole of the four Books together in one volume on a somewhat larger scale.

In the present edition, forming as it does part of a series of Elementary Classics,' I have endeavoured to present all explanations in the simplest possible shape. On the other hand I have not consciously avoided any difficulty: I am therefore hopeful that the notes may not only be clear and intelligible to very young students, but also of some service to those who are fairly advanced.
