11. Why did he say these things to them? 12. What commandment did he give them? 13. What did Christ describe as the greatest love?

14. How did Christ describe his friends? 15. What distinction did Christ make between servants and friends?

How were his disciples his friends rather than his

servants?

LESSON XXXVII.

Christ's Discourse with his Disciples continued.
John xv. 16-27,

16. WHAT did Christ say to his disciples. concerning their relation to him ?

For what purpose does he tell them they were redeemed?

How is the last clause of this verse reconciled with verse 13, of chap. xiv. ?

11 These things have I spoken unto you, that my joy might remain in yon, and that your joy might be full.

12 This is my commandment, That ye love one another, as I have loved you.

13 Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.

14 Ye are my friends, if ye do whatsoever I command you.

15 Henceforth I call you not servants; for the servant knoweth not what his lord doeth: but I have called you friends; for all things that I have heard of my Father I have made known unto you.

16 Ye have not chosen me, but I have chosen you, and ordained you, that ye should go and bring forth fruit, and that your fruit should remain: that whatsoever ye shall ask of the Father in my name, he may give it you.

17. What is Christ's command respecting mutual love?

18. What does he tell them of the world's

hatred ?

What does he mean by "the world”?

19. How does this account for the hatred of the world towards his disciples?

In what sense has Christ "chosen" his disciples "out of the world”?

20. Of what does he remind them?

When and where did he say this?

Why should they remember this?

What did he infer would be the world's treatment of them?

21. Why would the world do these things to Christ's disciples?

Does this account for all the persecutions of God's people?

22. What does Christ teach concerning the effect of his coming?

Why does his coming make their case so different? 23. What does Christ say of those who hate him?

17 These things I command you, that you love one another. 18 If the world hate you, ye know that it hated me before it hated you. 19 If ye were of the world, the world would love his own: but because ye are not of the world, but I have chosen you out of the world, therefore the worli hateth you.

20 Remember the word that I said unto you, The servant is not greater than his lord. If they have persecuted me, they will also persecute you; if they have kept my saying, they will keep your's also. 21 But all these things will they do unto you for my name's sake, because they know not him that sent me.

27 If I had not come and spoken unto them, they had not had sin: but now they have no cloak for their sin.

28 He that hateth me hateth my Father also.

24. What does he teach respecting the

nature and aggravation of their sin?

Does all sin consist in the rejection of Christ? 25. What word of prophecy was this fulfilled?

Where is this written?

26. What does he tell them of the office of the promised Comforter?

Who would send him?

Does this expression, "I will send," furnish any evidence of Christ's divine authority?

From whom would the Comforter proceed? What other title has he?

How would the spirit of truth testify of Christ? 27. Who else would bear witness? Why would they do it?

What advantages would this give them as wit nesses?

What general instruction may be derived from this portion of Christ's farewell discourse with his disciples?

24 If I had not done among them the works which none other man did, they had not had sin: but now have they both seen and hated both me and my Father.

25 But this cometh to pass, that the word might be fulfilled that is written in their law, They hated me without a cause.

26 But when the Comforter is come, whom I will send unto you from the Father, even the Spirit of truth, which proceedeth from the Father, he shall testify of me;

27 And ye also shall bear witness, because ye have been with me from the beginning.

LESSON XXXVIII.

The Holy Spirit promised and his Offices described. John xvi. 1-16.

1. WHY had Christ spoken these things to his disciples?

What does the word "offended" mean, here?

2. Of what did he forewarn his disciples?

Did such a time ever come?

3. Why would any treat them in this manner?

Does all persecution arise from ignorance of God?

4. Why did Christ tell them these things? Why did he not tell them at first?

5. Whither did he tell them he was going?

How is the latter clause of this verse to be reconciled with chap. xiii. verse 36?

CHAP. XVI.-1 These things have I spoken unto you, that ye should not be offended.

2 They shall put you out of the synagogues: yea, the time cometh, that whosoever killeth you will think that he doeth God service.

3 And these things will they do unto you, because they have not known the Father, nor me.

4 But these things have I told you, that when the time shall come, ye may remember that I told you of them. And these things I said not unto you at the beginning, because I was with you.

5 But now I go my way to him that sent me; and none of you asketh me, Whither goest thou?

6. What was the effect of Christ's discourse

on the disciples?

7. What did Christ tell his disciples concerning the design and consequences of his leaving them?

. Who did he mean by the Comforter?

What does Christ's mode of expression teach us concerning the attributes of the Godhead!

8. What was to be the office of the Comforter?

What is the meaning of "reprove" here?

9. What is emphatically "the sin" of the world? 10. How would the coming of the Comforter reprove the world of righteousness?

11. How would the coming of the Comforter reprove the world of judgment? Who is meant by the "prince of this world"?

12. What did Christ say of his reserve in respect to other things?

6 But because I have said these things unto you, sorrow hath filled your heart.

7 Nevertheless I tell you the truth; It is expedient for you that I go away: for if I go not away, the Comforter will not come unto you; but if I depart, I will send him unto you.

8 And when he is come, he will reprove the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment.

9 Of sin, because they believe not on me;

10 Of righteousness, because I go to my Father, and ye see me no

more;

11 Of judgment, because the prince of this world is judged.

12 I have yet many things to say urto you, but ye cannot bear them now.
