SCRIPTURE LESSON. HEY said therefore unto him, What sign showest thou then, that we may see, and believe thee? what dost thou work? Our fathers did eat manna in the desert; as it is written, he gave them bread from heaven to eat. Then Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Moses gave you not that bread from heaven; but my Father giveth you the true bread from heaven. For the bread of God is he which cometh down from heaven, and giveth life unto the world. Then said they unto him, Lord, evermore give us this bread. And Jesus said unto them, I am the bread of life: he that cometh to me shall never hunger; and he that believeth on me shall never thirst.-John vi: 30-35. And have hope toward God that there shall be a resurrection of the dead, both of the just and unjust.-Acts xxiv: 15. PRAYER. GOD, our Father, with whom is no change nor shadow of turning, from whom cometh every good and perfect gift, we ask of Thee wisdom, who giveth to all liberally. We would ask, in faith, nothing doubting, believing that in coming nigh to Thee, Thou dost draw near to us. O Thou, who canst not be tempted with evil, neither dost tempt any one; we confess that we are led away by our own lust and enticed; but we pray Thee, O Father, to hear our prayer in the hour of peril, and save us from the evil of the world. Amen. SCRIPTURE LESSON. LESSED are they that do his commandments, that they may have right to the tree of life, and may enter in through the gates into the city.-Rev. xxii: 14. Blessed is he whose transgression is forgiven, whose sin is covered.-Ps. xxxii: 1. Blessed is he that considereth the poor: the Lord will deliver him in time of trouble.-Ps. xli: 1. Blessed is the man that endureth temptation; for when he is tried, he shall receive the crown of life.-James i: 12. Blessed are the dead which die in the Lord; they rest from their labors, and their works do follow them.-Rev. xiv: 13. Blessing, and glory, and wisdom, and thanksgiving, and honor, and power, and might, be unto our God for ever and ever.-Rev. vii: 12. PRAYER. ATHER in heaven, Thy word is true; it leads the soul in the way of life; it makes wise the simple; gives sight to the blind; and saves from the sin that is in the world all who truly believe. And as we are prone to let go the things which make for our peace, and as Thou wilt help those who come to Thee to learn Thy truth, we pray Thee to cause the light of Thy word to shine in our minds, and give us hearts free from all pride and trust in our own strength, that we may hear that word, that our lives may be such as shall please Thee. We pray that we may serve Thee as dear children all the days of our life. We ask it through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. SCRIPTURE LESSON. Y brethren, count it all joy when ye fall into divers temptations; knowing this, that the trying of your faith worketh patience. But let patience have her perfect work, that ye may be perfect and entire, wanting nothing. If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him. But let him ask in faith, nothing wavering: for he that wavereth is like a wave of the sea driven with the wind and tossed. For let not that man think that he shall receive anything of the Lord.-James i: 2 7. PRAYER. UR Father, we rejoice that Thy spirit always strives with our spirits to bring us to holier resolves and better deeds. We thank Thee for the army of those who contend bravely for truth and justice in all ages, and especially for those of our own age who light their lamps by Thy truth, and enlighten others. We thank Thee for the things new and old, which the devout bring forth out of Thy treasury. We thank Thee that those things which are hidden from the worldly and prudent are revealed to the simple-minded and pure in heart. May we see Thee as Thou art, and worship Thee in spirit and in truth, being united to Thee by faith in Christ. Amen. SCRIPTURE LESSON. OUT this I say, he which soweth sparingly shall reap also sparingly; and he which soweth bountifully shall reap also bountifully. Every man according as he purposeth in his heart, so let him give; not grudgingly, or of necessity: for God loveth a cheerful giver.-II. Cor. ix: 6, 7. To do good and to communicate, forget not; for with such sacrifices God is well pleased.—Heb. xiii: 16. Whoso hath this world's goods, and seeth his brother have need, and shutteth up his compassion from him, how dwelleth the love of God in him?—I. John iii: 17. Give alms of thy goods, and never turn thy face from any poor man; and then the face of the Lord shall not be turned away from thee. Be merciful after thy power. If thou hast much, give plenteously; if thou hast little, do thy diligence gladly to give that little; for so gatherest thou thyself a good reward in the day of necessity.-Apocrypha. He that hath pity upon the poor lendeth unto the Lord; and that which he hath given will he pay him again.-Prov. xix: 17. PRAYER. LORD our Father, without whom nothing is strong and nothing is holy: help us to discern how worthy Thou art to be adored, and how greatly we need Thy continual help, that our life may be dedicated to perpetual love and worship, and that we may, in the life that now is, enjoy a foretaste of that which awaits us hereafter, and which will be ours in a day without night, and in a world without end. Amen. SCRIPTURE LESSON. E that worketh deceit shall not dwell within my house, he that telleth lies shall not tarry in my sight.-Ps. ci: 7. These are the things that ye shall do: speak ye every man the truth to his neighbor. Execute the judgment of truth and peace in your gates; and love no false oath.-Zech. viii: 16, 17. Lie not one to another.Col. iii: 9. Buy the truth, and sell it not.-Prov. xxiii. 23. Lying lips are an abomination to the Lord.-Prov. xii: 22. The mouth that speaketh lies shall be stopped. The lip of truth shall be established forever; but a lying tongue is but for a moment.-Prov. xii: 19. Lead me in thy truth, and teach me, for thou art the God of my salvation. -P3. xxv. 5. PRAYER. LMIGHTY Father, who hast given us grace at this time to make our common supplications unto Thee; and dost promise that when two or three are gathered together in Thy name Thou wilt grant their requests; fulfil now, O Lord, the desires and petitions of Thy servants, as may be most expedient for us; granting us in this world knowledge of Thy truth, and in the world to come life everlasting. Amen. |
