TREASURER'S STATEMENT.

KNOWLES FUND.

No change has been made in the investment of this fund since the report in July, 1888.

[merged small][ocr errors][merged small][merged small][merged small][merged small][merged small][merged small][merged small]

This fund is deposited in savings banks in Connecticut. With added interest it amounted, July 1, 1889, to $3,480.32.

STATEMENT OF ACCOUNT WITH LOCAL BODIES.

The first column shows unpaid dues of 1888 and previous years, amounting to $2,936.59. The second shows the sums due July 1, 1889, amounting to $3,708.56. Total amount now overdue, $6,645.15. Twenty-four States and Territories have paid all dues of 1888 and previous years. Six have paid also the dues of 1889. The local bodies have not all adopted the same basis for the collection of funds for the Council. Some pay on the basis of their entire membership. Others exclude from their paying roll their unassociated churches, and all absentees. This want of accord among the local bodies makes an unsatisfactory showing on the books of the Treasurer, annoys the States whose arrearages are thereby increased yearly, and causes an unequal distribution of the expenses of the Council.

It is encouraging, however, to report that the financial disagreement between the Council and the local bodies is steadily diminishing, and recent correspondence leads us to hope for its entire removal at an early day.

The Council at Chicago, in 1886, instructed the Treasurer as follows: Resolved, (1) That the churches be asked to contribute annually the sum of one and one half cents per member, to meet the current expenses during the next three years. Minutes of 1886, page 46.

* A part of this arrearage is due to the fact that New York has paid for resident members only.
