11 As we must be judged of God after death, let us live as we would wish to die.

"Seeing then that all these things shall be dissolved, what manner of persons ought ye to be in all holy conversation and godliness, looking for and hasting unto the coming of the day of God, wherein the heavens being on fire shall be dissolved, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat? Nevertheless we, according to his promise, look for new heavens and a new earth, wherein dwelleth righteousness. Wherefore, beloved, seeing that ye look for such things, be diligent that ye may be found of him in peace, without spot, and blameless. 15 And account that the longsuffering of our Lord is salvation; even as our beloved brother Paul also according to the wisdom given unto him hath written unto

15 If God seem to delay just recompence, be patient. He mercifully wishes all men to repent, and therefore often gives, even to the most wicked, time for repentance.

But grow in grace, and in the knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. To him be glory both now and for ever.

and truly our fellowship is with the Father, and with his Son Jesus Christ. 4 And these things write we unto you, that your joy may be full. 5 This then is the message which we have heard of him, and declare unto you, that God is light, and in him is no darkness at all. If we say that we have fellowship with him, and walk in darkness, we lie, and do not the truth: but if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth

us from all sin. If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. If we say that we have not sinned, we make him a liar, and his word is not in us.

What greater encouragement to repentance? God is not only so loving and merciful that He inclines to pardon the penitent, but we are permitted to appeal to his faithfulness and justice such full, perfect, and sufficient sacrifice for the sins of the whole world did our Lord and Saviour offer.

CHAPTER II.

APRIL 26, AUGust 25, Dec. 22.

'My little children, these things write I unto you, that ye sin not. And if any man sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous and he is the propitiation for our sins: and not for our's only, but also for the sins of the whole world. And hereby we do know that we know him, if we keep his commandments. ◄ He that saith, I know him, and keepeth not his com

If men would obey, they would gladly know and believe. So reasoned our blessed Lord himself. (John vii. 17.)

whoso keepeth his word, in him verily is the love of God perfected hereby know we that we are in him. He that saith he abideth in him ought himself also so to walk, even as he walked. Brethren, I write no new commandment unto you, but an old commandment which ye had from the beginning. The old commandment is the word which ye have heard from the beginning. Again, a new commandment I write unto you, which thing is true in him and in you: because the darkness is past, and the true light now shineth. He that saith he is in the light, and hateth his brother, is in darkness even until now. He that loveth his brother abideth in the light, and there is none occasion of stumbling in him. But he that hateth his brother is in darkness, and walketh in darkness, and knoweth not whither he goeth, because that darkness hath blinded his eyes. I write unto you, little children, because your sins are forgiven you for his name's

7 To love our brethren is both an old and new commandment. Its

principle is old; even as the eternal law of God. Its extent under the Gospel is new. Christians hold all men as brethren. Love" one another," saith our Lord to his disciples, " as I have loved you."

13 The object of this epistle is to strengthen the weak, confirm the strong, animate the hopeful, and encourage all in their course of holiness and peace.

15 The love of this world is conquered, where there is hope of heaven

sake. 13 I write unto you, fathers, because ye have known him that is from the beginning. I write unto you, young men, because ye have overcome the wicked one. I write unto you, little children, because ye have known the Father. I have written unto you, fathers, because ye have known him that is from the beginning. I have written unto you, young men, because ye are strong, and the word of God abideth in you, and ye have overcome the wicked one. 15 Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is the world, the lust of the flesh, the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world. 17 And the world passeth away, and the lust thereof: but he that doeth the will of God abideth for ever. 18 Little children, it is the last time and as ye have heard

20 So St. John terms the gifts of the Holy Ghost ; as also in ver. 27.

22 He who denies Jesus Christ to be the Lord and Saviour of the world, cuts himself off from all hope of that peace here and that happiness hereafter, which the Gospelers.

had been of us, they would no doubt have continued with
us: but they went out, that they might be made manifest
that they were not all of us.
20 But ye have an unction
from the Holy One, and ye
know all things. I have not written unto you because ye
know not the truth, but because ye know it, and that no lie is
of the truth. 22 Who is a liar
but he that denieth that Jesus
is the Christ? He is anti-
christ, that denieth the Fa-
ther and the Son. Whoso-
ever denieth the Son, the same hath not the Father: but he
that acknowledgeth the Son hath the Father also. Let that
therefore abide in you, which ye have heard from the begin-
ning. If that which ye have heard from the beginning shal
remain in you, ye also shall continue in the Son, and in the
Father. And this is the promise that he hath promised us,
even eternal life. These things have I written unto you con
cerning them that seduce you.

in you, and ye need not that any man teach you: but as the same anointing teacheth you of all things, and is truth, and is no lie, and even as it hath taught you, ye shall abide in him. And now, little children, abide in him; that, when he shall appear, we may have confidence, and not be ashamed before him at his coming. If ye know that he is righteous, ye krow that every one that doeth righteousness is born of him.

And every man that hath this hope in him purifieth himself, even as he is pure. Whosoever committeth sin transgresseth also the law for sin is the transgression of the law. And ye know that he was manifested to take away our sins; and in him is no sin. He 8 Conscience confirms this truth. that committeth sin is of the devil; for the devil sinneth from the beginning. For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that he might destroy the works of the devil. Whosoever is born of God doth not commit sin; for his seed remaineth in him and he cannot sin, because he is born of God. In this the children of God are manifest, and the children of the devil: whosoever doeth not righteousness is not of God, neither he that loveth not his brother. For this is the message that ye heard from the beginning, that we should love one another. 12 Not as Cain, who was of that wicked
