IV. The Application of Stimuli after a
certain Time exhaufts the IRRITABI-
LITY OF EXCITABILITY of the System, 440

V. To recruit which Lofs, the all-wife
and merciful CREATOR has instituted
the Seafon of SLEEP,

{This System of BROWN is compared to Combustion,

VOL. III.

Dr: BROWN conceived, that to each Individual there was
allotted only a certain Portion of the IRRITABLE
PRINCIPLE from the Commencement of its animate
State,

The Reader will now understand, why Food, Drink, Air,
&c. though they Support Life, yet confume it; for he
will fee, that the Application of these Powers, though
they bring forth Life, confume the EXCITABILITY or
MATTER OF LIFE, just as Air blown into the Fire
brings forth more Flame, but wastes the FUEL, or
MATTER OF FIRE, -

This is conformable to the common Saying, the more a
Spark is blown, the brighter it burns, and the fooner it is
Spent,

Common, or ordinary, Seep, therefore, from

what has been faid, feems to be a State,
which takes place in order to reflore the
EXCITABILITY of the Syftem, which has
been expended by the Application and Ac-
tion of Stimuli.
