Mount Sinai, engendering to bondage, which is Agar for Sinai is a mountain in Arabia, which hath affinity to that Jerusalem which now is, and is in bondage with her children. But that Jerusalem, which is above, is free; which is our mother. For it is written: "Rejoice, thou barren, that bearest not break forth and cry, thou that travellest not : for many are the children of the desolate, more than of her that hath a husband." Now we, brethren, as Isaac was, are the children of promise. But as then he, that was born according to the flesh, persecuted him that was after the spirit; even so it is now. But what saith the scripture? "Cast out the bond-woman and her son: for the son of the bondwoman shall not be heir with the son of the freewoman." So then, brethren, we are not the chil dren of the bond-woman, but of the free; by the freedom wherewith Christ has made us free.

TRACT. Ps. cxxiv.-Qui confidunt in Domino, sicut mons Sion: non commovebitur in æternum, qui habitat in Jerusalem.

They who trust in the Lord, are as mount Sion: he who dwelleth in Jerusalein, shall never be moved. There are mountains on every side of it, and the Lord encompasseth his people both now and for evermore.

Gospel. John vi. 1. 15. At that time: Jesus went over the sea of Galilee, which is that of Tiberias and a great multitude followed him, because they saw the miracles which he did on them that were diseased. Jesus therefore went up into a mountain, and there he sat with his disciples. Now the pasch, the festival-day of the Jews, was near at hand. When Jesus therefore had lifted up his eyes,

and seen that a very great multitude cometh to him, he said to-Philip: Whence shall we buy bread that these may eat? And this he said to try him: for he himself knew what he would do. Philip answered him: Two hundred penny-worth of bread is not sufficient for them, that every one may take a little. One of his disciples, Andrew, the brother of Simon Peter, saith to him: There is a boy here that hath five barley loaves, and two fishes; but what are these among so many? Then Jesus said: Make the men sit down. Now there was much grass in the place. So the men sat down, in number

about five thousand. And Jesus took the loaves: and when he had given thanks, he said to his disciples: Gather up the fragments that remain, lest they be lost. They gathered up therefore, and filled twelve baskets with the fragments of the five barley loaves, which remained over and above to them that had eaten. Now these men, when they had seen what a miracle Jesus had done, said: This is of a truth the prophet that is to come into the world. Jesus, therefore, when he knew that they would come to take him by force and make him king, fled again into the mountain himself alone. CREDO.

LESSON. 1 Kings iii. 16. 28. In those days: Two women that were harlots, came to king Solomon, and stood before him: and one of them said: I beseech thee, my Lord, I and this woman dwelt in one house, and I was delivered of a child with her in the chamber. And the third day after that I was delivered, she also was delivered; and we were together, and no other person with us in the house, only we two. And this woman's child died in the night. For in her sleep she overlaid him. And rising in the dead time of the night, she took my child from my side while I thy handmaid was asleep, and laid it in her bosom and laid her dead child in my bosom. And when I rose in the morning to give my child suck, behold it was dead; but considering him more diligently, when it was clear day, I found that it was not mine which I bore. And the other woman answered: It is not so as thou sayest, but thy child is dead, and mine is alive. On the contrary she said: Thou liest: for my child liveth, and thy child is dead. And in this manner they strove before the king. Then saith the king: The one saith, my child is alive, and thy child is dead. And the other answereth, Nay, but thy child is

dead, and mine liveth. The king therefore said: Bring me a sword. And when they had brought a sword before the king, divide, said he, the living child in two, and give half to the one, and half to the other. But the woman, whose child was alive, said to the king, (for her bowels were moved upon her child) I beseech thee, my Lord, give her the child alive, and do not kill it. But the other said: Let it be neither mine nor thine, but divide it. The king answered and said: Give the living child to this woman, and let it not be killed, for she is the mother thereof. And all Israel heard the judgment which the king had judged, and they feared the king, seeing that the wisdom of God was in him to do judgment.

TRACT. Deal not, &c. as before, p. 116. Gospel. John H. 13. 25. At that time: The pasch of the Jews was at hand, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem: and he found in the temple them that soll oxen, and sheep, and doves, and the changers of money sitting. And when he had made as it were a scourge of little cords, he drove them all out of the temple, the sheep also and the oxen, and he poured out the changers money, and the tables he overthrew. And he said to them that sold doves: Take these things hence, and make not the house of my father a house of traffic. And his disciples remembered that it was written: "The zeal of thy house hath eaten me up." Then the Jews answered, and said to him: What sign dost thou shew us, seeing thou dost these things? Jesus answered, and said to them: Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up. The Jews then

said: Six and forty years was this temple in build, ing, and wilt thou raise it up in three days? But he spoke of the temple of his body. When therefore he was risen again from the dead, his disciples remembered that he had said this, and they believed the scripture, and the word that Jesus had said. Now when he was at Jerusalem, at the pasch, upon the festival day, many believed in his name, seeing his miracles which he did. But Jesus did not trust himself to them, because he knew all men, and because he needed not that any should give testimony of man, for he knew what was in man.
