PREFACE.

AMONG the various accomplishments that all students ought to possess is that of knowing the extent of their own intellectual powers. This little volume will, it is hoped, furnish something that may be helpful in that direction. No one ought to presume to claim any real acquaintance with the grammar,. syntax, history, and antiquities of a foreign language unless able to render it into his own without any immediate preparation: the extracts now offered, nearly all of which have stood the test of frequent translation, will supply, it is believed, ample practice. The Editor has aimed at making them alike interesting and instructive, few being chosen merely for their difficulty. As it is more than likely that several have found a place in similar collections, the Editor thinks it only right to say that, with the exception of the free use of University and School Examination Papers, he has depended entirely upon his own judgment. Any corrections or suggestions, addressed as below, will be thankfully received.
