what was far, far worse, they had lost their good temper and their friendship for each other. So they all sneaked off to bed, very wretched and ashamed.

14. Now, I have heard it said, but I hope that there is some mistake about it, that there are boys and girls who, like these cats, each want all nice things for themselves.

15. They cannot find any pleasure in seeing other people enjoy things. Indeed they are so greedy that they will even quarrel with their brothers and sisters for any nice thing they see, and, like the poor silly cats, they lose what is far more valuable than what they try to get; they lose their good temper and their friendship for each other. "Little children,

love one another."

A long way from this place, there is a land where there is a great deal of cold, and where much snow falls, and where the hills are so large and so high that their tops seem to reach the sky.

1. The cat, having a mind to make a meal of the cock, caught him one morning by surprise, and asked him what he could say for himself why he should not kill him.

2. The cock replied that he was useful to mankind by crowing in the morning and calling them up to their daily labour.

3. "That is true," says the cat, "and is the very objection I have against you; for you make such a shrill ugly noise that people cannot sleep because of it."

4. Justice and reason have often very little chance against wickedness when it is in power.

She knelt before her mother,

And bent her pretty head;
Her small hands clasp'd together,
She whisper'd soft, and said-

"Heavenly Father, hear my prayer;
I'm wilful, cross, and wild,
Give me a gentle, loving heart,
Make me a happy child.

"Bless my father and my mother, Bless the friends I love;

Make me an angel when I die,

To live with Thee above."

LITTLE PUSSY.

I like little pussy,

Her coat is so warm;
And if I don't hurt her,
She'll do me no harm.

So I'll not pull her tail,
Nor drive her away;

But pussy and I

Very gently will play.

We will play in the field,

And we'll play in the house;

I'll give her a reel,

And she'll think it's a mouse.

Then she'll sit by my side,

And I'll give her some food;
And she'll love me because
I am gentle and good.

LITTLE RAIN DROPS.

Oh! where do you come from,

You little drops of rain,

Pitter patter, pitter patter,
Down the window pane?

They won't let me walk,
And they won't let me play,
And they won't let me go
Out of doors at all to-day.

Tell me, little rain drops,
Is that the way you play,
Pitter patter, pitter patter,
All the rainy day?

They say I'm very naughty,
But I've nothing else to do,
But sit here at the window:
I should like to play with you.

The little rain drops cannot speak, But pitter, patter, pat,

Means we can play on this side, Why can't you play on that?
