tempt to show that the "one word unbelief" explains the meaning of "every verse" in the ninth of the Romans appears to us, therefore, to indicate a degree of overweening self-confidence almost approaching to mental imbecility, which it is painful to characterise. It is unworthy of the author-unworthy of his talents and learning.

We must now, however, come to a close.-We have endeavoured to weigh in the "balances of the sanctuary," the leading conclusions and interpretations of the author, and we have found them "wanting." Such, at least, is our conviction; and we have given our reasons for it. Let our readers judge for themselves. "Let every man be fully persuaded in his own mind." All error is dangerous, and must, from its nature, be prejudicial to the interests of the soul, and of vital godliness. The native tendency of the author's system is to lead the sinner, in an important sense, to put his trust in himself, and not in God. There are, according to the author's doctrine, multitudes who are so "spoiled and corrupted" that God cannot save them -he is "shut up" to make them "vessels of dishonour." In these cases, if the sinner would be saved, he must put his trust in himself. But what saith the Scripture on this point? "Cursed be the man that trusteth in man, and maketh flesh his arm."

1. A DEFENCE OF INFANT BAPTISM, embodying Replies to the late Dr. Carson, Hon. and Rev. B. W. Noel, &c.Price 1s. 6d. Boards.

"The subject is discussed with very great acuteness and clearness, and with liveliness and good temper. The conclusions are wrought out in a forcible and convincing manner; and altogether the work is a useful contribution to the subject."-Free Ch. Mag.

"The present work contains a masterly exposure and refutation of the sentiments of several of the ablest writers who have denied the doctrine of Infant Baptism."-Monitor.

"We have perused it with the highest satisfaction, and recommend it to our readers as well calculated to enlighten and settle their minds on this point."-Sco. Christian Journal.

2. A CATECHISM on the Nature, Design, Subjects, and Mode of CHRISTIAN BAPTISM.- Third Edition, Price Fourpence.

"We heartily commend this Catechism. Parents should procure it and ponder it well; and all who wish to master the argument for the Baptism of Infants, and to have their minds fully satisfied on this question, as well as in regard to the mode of dispensing the ordinance, could not do better than study it thoroughly."-Scottish Presbyterian.

"Calculated to be highly useful."-Scottish Cong. Mag.

"The subject is discussed as dispassionately and candidly as any Baptist could desire,-only we would warn all such, that they must lay their account to find the arguments of their leading writers turned dexterously, and fairly also, against themselves."-Scottish Guardian.

3. A CATECHISM ON THE LORD'S SUPPER, for the use of Young Communicants, and the more advanced Classes of Sabbath Schools. Eighteenth Thousand.—Price One Penny.

"We have examined this Catechism with some care. It seems to us to contain clear and scriptural views of Divine truth on the important subject of which it treats; and to be well fitted to guard inquirers against prevailing errors, and to prepare Young Communicants for the due and profitable participation of the Lord's Supper."-Scottish Guardian.

"A brief and comprehensive view of the doctrines and duties connected with the ordinance of the Supper. It is sound in doctrine, simple in expres sion, and REMARKABLY CHEAP IN PRICE."-Christian Journal.

"We can give it our warm recommendation. Sound, judicious, clear, and often felicitous in its arrangement of the topics of the text, it is well adapted to usefulness in the hands of Sabbath School Teachers, or of the members of advanced Bible Classes." -Scottish Press.

"It is a clear, concise, and impressive exposition of the portion of Scripture of which it treats."-Sco. Christian Journal. "We recommend this little volume as a most instructive guide to the perusal of a precious portion of divine truth.”Scottish Guardian.

3. THE JUDGMENT OF THE PAPACY, and the Reign of Righteousness. By THOMAS HOUSTON, D.D.-Price Two Shillings.

"This is a book very much to our taste. The author looks at the world and the church in the light of Scripture, and accordingly he views every thing practically.-We wish for the book a wide circulation, and for the enlightened author much usefulness in all his labours."-Sco. Cong. Mag.

4. YOUTHFUL DEVOTEDNESS: or, the Youth of the Church Instructed in the Duties of Practical Religion By THOS. HOUSTON, D. D., Knockbracken— with Recommendatory Preface by Professor SYMINGTON, D. D., Paisley-Foolscap 8vo.-Price 2s. 6d.

"It is a production of solid merit and of genuine excellence; comprehensive in plan, perspicuous in its treatment, and adapted to be extensively useful. We do not think that a parent concerned for the respectability and moral welfare of his sons and daughters, could put into their hands a more profitable manual. We have seen a very considerable number of volumes treating of the subject in question; but for manly sentiment, judicious remark, and calm wisdom, we would give Dr. Houston's work a decided preference."-M'Phail's Mag.
