ALTHOUGH the work of which the following is a translation, had been fifteen years before the public, and noticed only long after its appearance by one of the leading reviews of this country* and America as a production of extraordinary merit, yet, during that time, no effort had been made to present an English translation of it to the public. Whether this arose from the indifference to German literature of the graver cast,―our acquaintance having chiefly been limited to its dramatic and poetic works, or was in a degree occasioned by the acknowledged obscurity which pervades M. Niebuhr's style and the difficulty of the subject--certain it is, that though his originality of views and depth of research were the occasional theme of admiration amongst the literati of this country, it seemed as
