be heard. Is this my case? If so, my congregational habits are unedifying. How delightful is the scene, when the whole congregation with one mind and one mouth glorify God!”

6. HAVE I REASON TO EXPECT GOD's BLESSING? Do I solemnly pray before, and when I come to church, that grace may be given to the minister, to the congregation, and to myself? When the blessing has been pronounced, do I, instead of rising with indecorous haste, spend a little time in supplication, that the word preached may profit those who have heard it? Isa. lv. 10, 11; Heb. iv. 2.

7. Do I VALUE MY RELIGIOUS ADVANTAGES? Do I esteem the worship of God my highest privilege on earth? And do I both improve it as a preparation, and enjoy it as a foretaste, of the everlasting sabbath which remains to the people of God? Heb. iv. 9.

Prayer.

Almighty God, unto whom all hearts be open, all desires known, and from whom no secrets are hid, cleanse the thoughts of my heart by the inspiration of thy Holy Spirit, that I may perfectly love thee, and worthily magnify thy name, through Christ my Lord. Amen.

PROVIDENT INSTITUTION.

The rules of this institution are too long and numerous to be copied in this place. It is divided into two branches; the adult branch, for any members of the congregation; and the Sunday-school branch for the benefit of the children. There is a sick-fund and a sa

vings'-fund; the latter intended to provide for some future object, such as apprenticing a child; or to save a sum for a son when he comes of age, &c., &c. In the children's branch, the sick-fund includes medical attendance; in the the adult branch, there is a distinct fund for medical attendance, as many may belong to the club who can afford to pay for it independently. The payments of the children are,—

Children under ten years of age subscribe to the first class only. Children between ten and sixteen may belong either to the first or second class, according to their earnings. Scholars who do not enter the society till after they are sixteen, must belong to the third class, to secure four shillings per week in sickness. They may belong to the fourth, provided their earnings, in time of health, amount to eight shillings weekly; but not otherwise.

The children pay their subscriptions to their teacher on a Sunday afternoon; they are entered in a book provided for that purpose, and it does not occupy

above two or three minutes. When the children leave the school, if they have conducted themselves properly, and if they can give a good reason for going, the superintendent has the power of passing them to the adult branch, without increase of payment or admission fees.

The object of the saving-fund is to encourage children at an early age to lay by such little sums as they are able, in order to provide for future emergencies. They are accustomed to waste the pence which are frequently given to them, without considering how much benefit they would derive from depositing them safely, and allowing them to accumulate.
