objects; the ceremoniae circuits, the curious sprinkling of sacred meal; minutiae of dress of the partici pants, and implements used at particular points in the ceremonies; the music, the nfovements, the dances; these and many other interesting and curious matters are fully detailed. Very interesting are the evidences adduced that many of the ceremonials are real dramatizations of legends or teachings. Many of the things Dr. FEWKES tells us are not absolutely novel; other persons have seen and described Pueblo ceremonials but if we had similarly detailed accounts of all ceremonials from all the Pueblos, we should possess the necessary material for a most important comparison.

What Mrs JAMES STEVENSON has done for the Zuñi child, Mr. OWENS does for the Tusayan. The American Indian every where is ceremonious and indulges in symbolism: but here in sun and silence and adobe" he becomes even more mystical than elsewhere, and every movement, from the cradle to the grave, demands its observance, requires a ceremony. The infant is ceremonially bathed at birth; on the fifth day mother and child are bathed and, for the first time since her confinement, the mother looks upon the sun; on the tenth day, and on the fifteenth, the child is bathed. But it is on the twentieth day that the great ceremony, participated in by many relatives and prepared for with great pains, is performed. It consists of three distinct portions purification of the mother, naming of the child, presentation of the child to the sun.

In Vol. III are two papers representing work done prior to 1890, an Outline of the Documentary History of the Zuñi Tribe, by AD. F. BANDELIER and Somalogical Observations on Indians of the Southwest by

H. F. C. TEN KATE. All who have read any of the writings of our eminent authority know that the first named paper is scholarly and exhaustive. The Documentary History of Zuñi is considered under the several chapters; First discovery of Zuñi by the Spaniards 1538-1539, The Tribe of Zuñi 1539– 1600, and Zuñi in the seventeenth Century. This romantic fragment of Early American history is treated in a clear, critical and thoroughly scientific manner and must be fundamental to all good ethnographic study of the Cibola Pueblos. TEN KATE institutes a comparison between the osteological material from the pre-Columbian ruins of the Southwest and anthropometric data from the existing populations of that whole region, in the hope of thereby solving the question as to who were the builders of these old structures. Among a number of interesting conclusions drawn from this comparison is this - that the modern Pueblo Indians are, physically, more like the builders of these old constructions, than are the Pimas and the Yumas. This conclusion agrees very well with other evidence drawn from ethnography, tradition and archaeology.

We cannot further discuss these publications but we must again emphasize the fact that this whole work is due to the liberality of a single noble-hearted woman; we are pleased also to state that the Expedition will, probably, not be interrupted by Mrs. Hemenway's death, provision being made in her will for its continuance. So, though she no longer lives to give that kindly personal interest and sympathy which have always been so helpful, we may hope to see in the future even better and richer results from this Expedition than we have seen in the past. FREDERICK STarr.
