any wise to be retained in the church, as most agreeable with the institution of Christ.

ARTICLE XXVIII.

Of the Lord's Supper.

'The Supper of the Lord is not only a sign of the love that Christians ought to have among themselves one to another; 2 but rather it is a sacrament of our redemption by Christ's death: insomuch that to such as rightly, worthily, and with faith receive the same, the bread which we break is a partaking of the body of Christ, and likewise the cup of blessing is a partaking of the blood of Christ.

11 Cor. x. 17. (Art. xxv (3).) xi. 33. Wherefore, my brethren, when ye come together to eat, tarry one for another.

2 See the accounts of the institution of this Sacrament. Matt. xxvi. 26, 27. Luke xxii. 19, 20. 1 Cor. xi. 23-25. The passage quoted in this Art. is 1 Cor. x. 16. The cup of blessing which we bless is it not the communion of the blood of Christ? The bread which we break, is it not the communion of the body of Christ. John vi. 54. Whoso eateth my flesh and drinketh my blood hath eternal life. 55-58.

Transubstantiation (or the change of the substance of bread and wine) in the Supper of the Lord, cannot be proved by Holy Writ, but is repugnant to the plain words of Scripture, overthroweth the nature of a sacrament, and hath given occasion to many superstitions.

4 The body of Christ is given, taken, and eaten, in the Supper, only after an heavenly and spiritual manner. And the mean whereby the body of Christ is received and eaten in the Supper, is faith.

The sacrament of the Lord's Supper was not by Christ's ordinance reserved, carried about, lifted up, or worshipped.

31 Cor. xi. 26. As often as ye eat this bread, and drink this cup. 27-29. Whosoever shall eat this bread, and drink this cup of the Lord unworthily, shall be guilty of the body and blood of the Lord. But let a man examine himself, and so let him eat of that bread and drink of that cup.

4 John vi. 54, &c. (Proof 2.) 60-64. Many therefore of his disciples, when they had heard this, said, This is a hard saying, who can hear it? .... he saith unto them, Doth this offend you?.. It is the Spirit that quickeneth, the flesh profiteth nothing: the words that I speak unto you, they are spirit, and they are life. verse 15. I am the bread of life: he that cometh to me shall never hunger; and he that believeth on me shall never thirst.

ARTICLE XXIX.

Of the Wicked which do not eat the Body of Christ in the Use of the Lord's Supper.

1 The wicked, and such as be void of a lively faith, although they do carnally and visibly press with their teeth (as St. Augustine saith) the sacrament of the body and blood of Christ, yet in no wise are they partakers of Christ, but rather to their condemnation do eat and drink the sign or sacrament of so great a thing.

11 Cor. x. 21. Ye cannot drink the cup of the Lord and the cup of devils. Ye cannot be partakers of the Lord's table and of the table of devils. 1 Cor. xi. 29. He that eateth and drinketh unworthily, eateth and drinketh damnation to himself, not discerning the Lord's body. ii. 14. Luke xiii. 26, 27.

Of the One Oblation of Christ finished upon the

The offering of Christ once made is the perfect redemption, propitiation, and satisfaction for all the sins of the whole world, both original and actual: 3 and there is none other satisfaction for sin but that alone. 4 Wherefore the sacrifices

Heb. ix. 25-28. Nor yet that he should offer himself often, as the high priest, &c. for then must he often have suffered since the foundation of the world but now once in the end of the world hath he appeared to put a way sin by the sacrifice of himself. of masses, in the which it was commonly said that the priest did offer Christ for the quick and the dead, to have remission of pain or guilt, were blasphemous fables, and dangerous deceits.

ARTICLE XXXII.

Of the Marriage of Priests.

Bishops, priests, and deacons, are not commanded by God's law either to vow the estate of single life, or to abstain from marriage: therefore it is lawful for them, as for all other Christian men, to marry at their own discretion, as they shall judge the same to serve better to godliness.

1 Cor. ix. 5. Have we not power to lead about a sister, a wife, as well as other apostles, and as the brethren of the Lord, and Cephas? 1 Tim. iii. 2, 4. A bishop then must be blameless, the husband of one wife....one that ruleth well his own house, having his children in subjection with all gravity. v. 5, 11. v. 12. Let the deacons be the husbands of one wife, ruling their children and their own houses well.
