from any Minister of the Gospel to compromise his duty; but that same Gospel recommends such a judicious discrimination of conduct, as to turn the moment of serious impression to the most profitable purpose. Experience confirms this lesson. We live not long in this world till we per◄ ceive both in ourselves and in others, an inward, as well as an outward, variety. We have all chords of character which are only to be touched by others that are in unison with them. The pious penetrating adviser will discover these, and apply them with discretion ; and the penitent, satisfied that the dispensations of God are all good and to be received with submissive duty, will feel himself drawn secretly by an attractive power which will fill his heart with celestial wisdom, and give har

mony to all his actions. This change of mind is an outward sign of inward grace; for "as many as are led by the "Spirit of God, they are the Sons of "God *"

To meet the several wants of men, we must observe diligently the various dispositions of the mind. Some minds are delicate, and require delicate applications. Others are boisterous and resisting, and must be softened by gentle language, and kind persuasion. Others, alas! are hardened in every feature, impenetrable both to harsh and gentle usage. But even these must not be neglected. These are they whom, as Jude says, we must, as it were, pull out of the fire; drag them from the imminent danger of their si

It is impossible in this short address to comprehend all the description of sinners, whose melancholy cases press hard on the compassionate. But I entreat you, who prepare to accompany me in the following Meditations, to consider them as personal applications to you; as I trust, by God's grace, that they have been to myself.
