AMERICAN MEDICAL ASSOCIATION.

ORIGIN AND HISTORY.

The Society originated in a desire formed in the New York State Medical Society for the elevation of the standard of medical education in the United States, at the session of said Society in the year 1839, and was expressed in resolutions offered by Dr. Jonathan McCall, of Utica, calling for a National Medical Convention, to be held on the first Tuesday of May 1840, in the city of Philadelphia; which convention, from want of a sufficient number of delegates, failed to organize, and accomplished nothing.

At the annual meeting of the New York Medical Society in 1844, resolutions were offered by Dr. N. S. Davis, of Binghampton (now of Chicago), and Dr. Alexander Thompson, of Cayuga County, having for their object the

HAZARD & CASWELL'S

Pure Cod-Liver Oil.

Prof. Parker, of New York, says: "I have tried almost every other manufacturer's oil, and give yours the decided preference."

Ferro-Phosphate Elixir of Calisaya, with Bismuth. This combination has now become exceedingly popular with the first physicians of the country. Each tablespoonful contains eight grains Ammonio Citrate of Bismuth, four grains Pyrophosphate of Iron, fifteen grains Royal Calisaya Bark.

Ferro-Phosphorated Elixir of Gentian.

Containing one ounce of Gentian and 128 grains pyrophosphate Iron to the pint, making in each dessert-spoonful 71⁄2 grs. Gentian and 2 grs. Pyrophosphate Iron.

Elixir Teraxacum Comp.

Each dessert-spoonful contains fifteen grains of Teraxacum,

Elixir Pepsin, Bismuth, and Strychnine.

Each fluid drachm contains one-sixtieth of a grain of Strychnine. Cod-Liver Oil, with Phosphate of Lime. This is an agreeable emulsion, holding three grains Phosphate of Lime in each table-spoonful.

Ido-Ferrated Cod-Liver Oil.

This combination holds 16 grs. Iodide of Iron to the ounce of our pure Cod-Liver Oil ["Oleum Morrhuæ "] in perfect solution, making a pleasant and beautiful, clear, light brown combination, free from the unpleasantness of the Iodide of Iron. One of the advantages of the Ido-Ferrated over all other combinations of Cod-Liver Oil, is that a much less quantity is sufficient for a doze, as it contains four or five times the amount of Iodine found in the natural oil. Physicians can rely upon this preparation as containing 16 grs. of the Iodide of Iron in each ounce of Cod-Liver Oil. Cod-Liver Oil, with Iodine, Phosphorus, and Bromine. This combination represents Phosphorus, Bromine, Iodine, and CodLiver Oil in a state of permanent combination.

PREFACE.

THE work of publishing the CHICAGO MEDICAL REGISTER AND DIRECTORY has been undertaken in the belief that such a book is both needed and desired by the Medical Profession of the State, and particularly of Chicago.

Expressions of such desire have come from many directions, both before and since the beginning of the work; and it has been the sole aim of the editors to make the volume such as the Profession would approve.

While the title indicates only a Medical Register of Chicago, the State at large has not been neglected, nor the other professions cognate to that of medicine; and equal care has been exercised to make all parts of the work accurate.

The Editors however, feel that an apology is due for the delay in the issue of the book beyond the time promised, and must urge in extenuation the fact of the great labor necessary in bringing out a first volume of such a publication.

In the preparation of the List of Physicians the Presidents of the regular Medical Colleges, and Societies of Chicago and of the State of Illinois-Drs. J. W. Freer, N. S. Davis, W. H. Byford, G. C. Paoli, D. B. Trimble, and D. W. Young—kindly consented to act as revisors. The list has been revised by them with great care, and is printed as they have indicated. The Editors are only responsible as publishers.

It is the intention to publish the REGISTER annually, but the present volume is issued so near the beginning of 1873 that Volume 2 will not be published before May, 1874, and no sub
