PREFACE.

Ir is with mingled feelings that we complete another volume of the Sailors' Magazine. The predominant sentiment, however, which fills the mind, is one of gratitude and hope. In the more recent history of the British and Foreign Sailors' Society, ample grounds for encouragement have been furnished to its directors, whilst the scenes now opening upon them will, they doubt not, supply fresh occasions for thankfulness. During the year which has nearly reached its close, the funds of the Society have increased, the number of its friends has enlarged, and the sphere of its operations extended. Peace has blessed its councils, and prosperity crowned its exertions. "What hath God wrought!" should be the devout and grateful acknowledgment of all, who by their sympathy and aid, have contributed to this happy consummation. The future, too, is pregnant with hope. The debt, which has for years crippled the efforts of the society, will, at the next annual meeting, be extinguished; and the state of its funds will justify a still further increase of its agency, and an extension of its labours. May its successes be multiplied a hundred fold!

In thus recording their sentiments on a review of the past, the directors refer with satisfaction to the encouragement which has attended their arrangements in connexion with the Sailors' Church. The pulpit has been supplied by ministers of various denominations, whose zeal in the cause of seamen has been stimulated by what they have there wit
