3 They go from strength to strength Through this dark vale of tears, Till each arrives at length,

Till each in heav'n appears:

O glorious throng! Our hearts desire,
To join their choir, And swell the song.

PSALM LXXXVII.

1 GLO

P. M.

LORIOUS things of thee were spoken,
Zion, city of our God;

He, whose word can ne'er be broken,
Chose thee for His own abode.

2 Lord, the Church is still thy dwelling,
Still is precious in thy sight;
Judah's temple far excelling,
Beaming with the Gospel's light.

3 On the Rock of Ages founded,
What can shake her sure repose ?
With Salvation's walls surrounded,
She can smile at all her foes.

4 Lo, the just of ev'ry nation,

Though in distant climes they rove,
Still as citizens of Zion

Shall be register'd above.

PSALM XC.

Version 1. C. M.

SHINE on our souls, Eternal God,
With rays of comfort shine;

O let thy favour crown our days,
And all their course be thine!

2 Did we not raise our hands to Thee,
Our hands would toil in vain ;
No joy success itself will give,
If Thou thy love restrain.

3 With Thee let ev'ry week begin;
With Thee each day be spent ;
For Thee each fleeting hour improv❜d,
Since each by Thee is lent.

4 Thus cheer us through the desert road,
Till all our labours cease,
And Heav'n refresh our wearied soul
With everlasting peace.

PSALM XC. Version 2. L. M.

1 GREAT Father of Eternity,

How short are ages in thy sight! A thousand rolling years with Thee Pass as a single watch of night. 2 But mortal life, how soon it flies! Dream of an hour, how frail our bloom! Like Spring's gay flow'rs, at morn we rise; Cut down ere night to fill the tomb. 3 O teach us to improve our days, To count our moments as they fly, And, form'd to Wisdom's sacred ways, In Thee to live, in Thee to die!

PSALM XCII. Version 1.

(From "The Spirit of the Psalms.") WEET is the task, O Lord, Thy glorious acts to sing,

SW

S. M.

To praise thy Name, and hear thy Word,
And grateful off"rings bring:

2

3

4

Sweet at the dawning hour
Thy boundless love to tell;

And, when the night-wind shuts the flower,
Still on the theme to dwell:

Sweet on the Day of Rest
To join in heart and voice,

With those who love and serve Thee best,
And in thy Name rejoice.

To songs of praise and joy
Be ev'ry Sabbath giv'n,

That such may be our blest employ
Eternally in heav'n.

[blocks in formation]

THOU, that art enthron'd above!

Thou, in whom we live and move! Thou, that art Most Great, Most High, Lord from all eternity!

O! how good, how excellent

"Tis, when tongue and heart consent,
Grateful hearts and joyful tongues,
Hymning Thee in tuneful songs.
When the morning gilds the skies,
When the stars of ev'ning rise,
We thy praises will record,
Sov'reign Ruler! mighty Lord !
Sov'reign Ruler! mighty Lord!
We thy praises will record:
Giver of these blessings! we
Pour the grateful song to Thee.

[blocks in formation]

1 VITH glory clad, with strength array'd,
The Lord, who o'er all nature reigns,
The world's foundations strongly laid,
And the vast fabric still sustains.
2 How surely stablish'd is thy throne
Which shall no change nor period see;
For thou, O Lord, and Thou alone,
Art God from all eternity.

3 The raging floods lift up their voice,
And toss the troubled waves on high;
But God above can still their noise,
And make the angry sea comply.
4 That mighty power thy works declare,
Exert, O Lord, thy Church to bless;
And grant that all her sons may wear
Their Saviour's robe of righteousness.

PSALM XCVII. L. M.

(From "The Spirit of the Psalms.")

I JEHOVAH reigns! O earth, rejoice;

Ye ransom'd isles, exalt your voice; Make ev'ry hill and vale around Responsive to the welcome sound.

2 Though far remov'd from mortal eye,
He reigns in glorious Majesty;
Himself in awful clouds conceal'd,
His truth, his justice, stand reveal'd.
3 Though vengeful lightnings, from the gloom,
His bold presumptuous foes consume;
Yet Mercy's voice, in gentle strains,
Tells ev'ry clime-Jehovah reigns.

4 For Christ has died-the Gospel's light Beams with mild radiance on our sight; And fallen man, redeem'd, forgiv'n, May lift his heart, his hopes, to heav'n. 5 O then obey his sacred word,

1

2

All ye

who love and fear the Lord: Go, publish through his wide domains The glorious truth-Jehovah reigns!

PSALM XCIX.

THE

S. M.

HE Lord Jehovah reigns;
Let all the nations fear;
Let sinners tremble at his throne,
And saints be humbled there.

Christ, our Redeemer, reigns;
Let earth adore its Lord;
Angelic hosts around him stand,
Swift to fulfil his word.

3 Before him prostrate fall,
And worship at his feet;
For perfect justice he maintains,
Enthron'd in Mercy's seat.

4 The Lord Jehovah reigns;
Let ev'ry creature fear;

Let sinners tremble at his throne,
And saints be humbled there.

PSALM C.

Version 1. L. M.

LL people that on earth do dwell,

1 AL

Sing to the Lord with cheerful voice; Him serve with fear, his praise forth tell, Come ye before him and rejoice.
