The boaster fell to earth with ponderous

sound,

The invading army speedily were fled;
See on his foe the unarmed conqueror bound,
Israel rejoiced to find Goliah dead.

Foe of the soul,-unseen but powerful thou, With thee conflicting, human strength must fail;

Jesus our shepherd conquered thee, and now, Arm'd with His might, the Christian shall

prevail.

ST. MATTHEW v. 22.-But I say unto you, that whosoever is angry with his brother without a cause, shall be in danger of the judgment.-See Gospel for the day.

'Tis good and pleasant to behold

Brothers at home agree;

The nearest friends that God has given,

Are of one family.

The same their study and their play,
They share their parents' smile;
And each the others tries to please,
And all their cares beguile.

God could not mean that such near friends

Should ever disagree,

Or teaze or call each other names,

But live in unity.

And all who love the holy God,
Will love each other too;
Sisters and brothers they become,
In bonds most sweet and true.

They share their heavenly Father's care, They share their Saviour's love;

The same their faith, the same their path, The same their home above.

Oh what a happy family

Will be assembled there;
Angels and saints in sweet accord,
Their Father's favours share.

On golden harps they hymn His praise, Their eyes behold His face;

And there in sweetest harmony,

They sing redeeming grace.

Trinity.

ROM. vi. 23.-For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life, through Jesus Christ our Lord. See Epistle for the day.

SIN causes death,-death of the soul;
Death of the soul that cannot die!

What can it mean that fearful word?

We may to understand it try.

But, Oh

what mind can now conceive

The torments lost ones feel in hell;

Souls buried deep, where darkness reigns,

As far from God as devils dwell.

Jesus, who came to visit earth,

Well knew what this sad word should mean ;

And suffer'd on the shameful cross,

Our guilty spirits to redeem.

Sweet are the gifts our friends bestow,
Although they're neither rich nor rare ;
We love them for the giver's sake,
And for the kindness they declare.

Still few can costly presents send;
Monarchs great blessings may bestow
On those they favour or esteem,
But only few are honour'd so.

Yet there's a pearl above all price,
That's offer'd by the King of Kings,
To all who will accept His grace,—
A gift that life eternal brings.

'Tis granted us for Jesus' sake, Unmix'd with pain, or fear, or care, That we may dwell with God on high, And sing His praise with angels there.
