Condemned by a Judge of earth,
With scourges torn, sent bleeding forth;
Enduring all that hate could plan,
Patient and meek-behold the Man!

Yet, when He first appear'd on earth, The heavenly host proclaim'd his birth; The water's firmness where He trodeThe risen dead declared him God.

Why did the Lord afflict Him thus?
Why did He bear it ?-'Twas for us.
We had incurred the wrath of God,
And He bore all the heavy load.

It was for this He came from Heaven;
It was for this his soul was riven
With scenes of misery and sin;

Oh! earth could have no joy for Him

But mercy's joy, our souls to win,
To make us blest, and free from sin;
His Father's law He satisfied

Most perfectly, or we had died

E

The second death, in quenchless fire,
Where the tormenting fiends conspire
With the undying worm, to tear
All spirits plunged in anguish there.

But, Oh! not mine!-I hope, I trust, Though I have sinn'd, and God is just; I'll fly to Christ,-He saves from sin, And casts out none that come to Him.

For Good Friday.

JOHN xix. 30.-When Jesus, therefore, had received the vinegar, he said, It is finished; and he bowed his head, and gave up the ghost.-See the Gospel for the day.

Q. Why this darkness at noon-day?
Why these awful noises, say?
Hark! the stony rocks are rending.
And the solid earth is trembling.

Lo! the Temple's veil is rent!
Who is brought to punishment?

A. On the torturing cross extended,
Jesus see, his sufferings ended!

Q.-Must the Lord of glory die?
Could he not from anguish fly?
Why the power to mortals given
To crucify the Lord of Heaven?

A.-Love to you, and love to me,
Nail'd him to the accursed tree.
For the guilt of all He suffer'd,
Full atonement then He offer'd

He became the Lamb of God,
Bowing low beneath the rod;
Thus to save from Satan's fury,
Souls unnumber'd born for glory.

Life's great Lord to yield his breath!
Never was there such a death ;—
Wonder not the rocks are rending;
Wonder not the earth is trembling.

Well the earth may shrink with fright,
And the sun refuse his light,

To view the Sun of Righteousness
Eclipsed with anguish and distress.

He is gone to Paradise;
Soon again he will arise
Lord of every happy spirit,
Who his glory shall inherit.

For Easter Sunday.

ROMANS VI. 9.-Knowing that Christ, being raised from the dead, dieth no more; death hath no more dominion over him. See Second Lesson for the Morning Service.

OUR Saviour hath risen in strength and in might,

We need not fear death nor the grave; Nor need all the powers of darkness affright, While Jesus is mighty to save.

If our spirits are freed from the bondage of sin,

Through faith in his life and his death,And in answer to prayer we've been made like to Him,

We may fearlessly yield up our breath.
