Though simple the pleasure, when He deigns

to shine,

The water He blesses is equal to wine.

I still would invite Him, and make Him my friend,

Wherever I am in this world, till the end; When my spirit to Him I would calmly resign, And hope in his radiance in heaven to shine.

For the Third Sunday after the
Epiphany.

MATTHEW viii. 2.-Lord, if thou wilt, thou canst make me clean.-Gospel for the day,

THE sins of pride and unbelief

Are rooted in my mind,

Selfish and base, I often prove

Ungrateful and unkind.

And though I'm not deform'd nor rude,
If these things dwell within,

The loveliest form will never hide
The leprosy of sin,

From His all-piercing sight, whose eyes Are as a flame of fire,

Oh! how shall I escape the dread,

Of his tremendous ire!

Oh! blessed Jesus wash me clean,
Thy heavenly grace impart,-
'Tis Thou alone can'st give me faith,
And make me pure in heart!

For the Fourth Sunday after the Epiphany.

MATTHEW viii. 23, 24.-And when he was entered into a ship, his disciples followed him. And behold, there arose a great tempest in the sea, insomuch that the ship was covered with the waves; but he was asleep.-See Gospel for the day.

CAN mortal power the winds restrain,
Or stay the ocean's swelling tide,—
The raving of the tempest tame,
Or quell the mountain billow's pride?

On the broad lake of Galilee,
A storm-toss'd bark was sailing fast;
The loud winds swept the raging sea.
And each dread moment seem'd its last.

Fear seized the crew, for vain their skill
To stem the fury of the deep;
But One alone, unmoved and still,
Had laid him down in tranquil sleep.

To Him the others turn for aid,-
The swelling waves our vessel fill;
Oh, Master, save! He rose, and said
To the wild waters,-" Peace! be still!"

And the wind ceased :-for, at his word, The storm pass'd off as summer showers; The foaming billows knew their Lord, And sank beneath his mighty power.

Thou, who didst still the troubled sea! Command that wars and tumults cease; Let the whole world thy glory see,Arise, and give the nations peace.

For the Fifth Sunday after the
Epiphany.

MATTHEW Xiii. 24, 25.-The kingdom of heaven is likened unto a man which sowed good seed in his field: But while men slept, his enemy came, and sowed tares amongst the wheat, and went his way.-See Gospel for the day.

Gop has compared his word to seed

Of wholesome grain, which forms the bread,
Proper our earthly frames to feed;
And sin, to tares which poison spread.

The world is likened to a field,

Where seed of different kinds is sown ;

The same green blade both seem to yield,— The difference by the ear is known.

God's word, received into the heart,
Will feed the soul and knowledge give,
By which it may from sin depart,
And turn unto the Lord and live.
