THE

CHILD'S SACRED YEAR.

For the First Sunday in Advent.

MATTHEW XXi. 13.-It is written, my house shall be called the house of prayer.-See Gospel for the day.

THE privilege is very great,

Lord! to thine house to go;

'Tis there the preachers of thy word

The way to glory show.

'Tis there thy people meet to pray,
And praise Thee for thy grace;
Oh! teach me to remember well
How sacred is the place.

B

For Thou can'st see my inmost soul;
And should my fancy rove,

Thou knowest when I think amiss,
Or slight thy wondrous love.

Though I may bow on bended knee,
And seem to seek thee There ;
Unless my heart is quite sincere,
Thou wilt not call it prayer.

The praises of a thankful heart
Ascending to thy throne,

For daily mercies I receive,

And gospel truth made known;

More than the organ's solemn sound,
Delightful though it be,

Or the sweet singer's tuneful voice,
Will be approved by Thee.

The contrite thought, the humble mind,

Striving thy will to learn

The wish to love thy holy law,

Well pleased Thou wilt discern.
