PREFACE.

My apology for offering these notes and the following remarks is my long experience in teaching infants, and a desire, under God's blessing, to assist those who are beginning. I have frequently heard it said, "I know enough to teach infants without preparation." Never was there a greater fallacy; their lesson needs the greatest Would you say of the foundation of a house, "Anything will do for this; it will not be seen"? Would you not bestow greater care on that, that your after-building might be firm and "endure"? In dealing with infants we are at the foundation; they fill our upper schools: and if the love of God has been planted in their young hearts they will long to hear more, and be ready to be "built up." An infant's lesson should be simple and attractive, but practical, and as connected as possible; when once the attention has been obtained there should be no breaks, or the little mind gets distracted.

Some may ask, Of what use can a practical lesson be? or how can it be made so to infants? A lesson is of small value unless it can be and is driven home to the children's hearts. They are not too young to decide for Christ.

The Bible abounds with interesting stories which are new and pleasing to the infantile mind. It is pleasant to see them taking in and enjoying the details of Joseph
