PREFACE

THIS work came into being on the suggestion of the late Professor Phillimore of Glasgow University. He watched its growth and at every stage gave me advice and assistance without which it could never have been brought to completion. No one was more pleased than he when the Senate of the University of Glasgow accepted it for the degree of D.Litt. But for the generous encouragement and support of Mr J. D. Duff of Trinity College, Cambridge, I doubt if it would ever have been printed. Sir George Douglas, Bt, of Springwood Park, employed his fine sense of English style in criticising and emending the original draft of the translation: his copious notes bear fruit on almost every page. I cannot refrain from acknowledging also the kindly interest of Professor Alexander Souter of Aberdeen University in my attempt, and the many useful hints he gave for the proper organisation of the work. I am also indebted to Mr R. G. Nisbet of Glasgow University for several useful criticisms and suggestions.

The Librarians of the Universities of St Andrews and Glasgow must also be thanked for much assistance and for permitting me during several vacations to pursue my researches in their libraries. Of all my authorities I have to make particular reference to the works of M. Henri Bornecque of Lille University. Had his books on Seneca not existed my labour would have been increased tenfold.

While the book was passing through the press Mr George A. Lawrence, Headmaster of our Demonstration School, read the proofs with the patience and precision of a true scholar, and I am grateful to him for many suggestions and corrections. WILLIAM A. EDWARD
