CHILDREN'S HYMNS AND RHYMES.

CREATION.

GOD made the sky that looks so blue;
He made the grass so green;

He made the flowers that smell so sweet,
In pretty colours seen.

God made the sun that shines so bright,
And gladdens all I see;

It comes to give us heat and light:
How thankful should we be!

God made the pretty bird to fly;
How sweetly has she sung!
And though she soars so very high,

She won't forget her

young.

God made the cow to give nice milk;

The horse for me to use;

I'll treat them kindly for His sake,
Nor dare His gifts abuse.

God made the water for my drink;
He made the fish to swim;

He made the tree to bear nice fruit:
Oh, how should I love Him!

FEAR OF THE DARK.

I WILL not fear,
For God is near

Through the dark night,
As in the light;

And while I sleep,

Safe watch will keep.
Why should I fear
When God is near?

THE CHILD'S PRAYER.

LORD, look down on me,

Sinful though I be,

Draw my heart to Thee.

Teach me how to pray,
Take my sins away,
Help me to obey.

Make me Thine own child,
Humble, meek, and mild,
By no sin defiled.

Lord, be Thou my Friend,
All my steps attend,
Keep me to the end.

In Thy faith and fear,
May I serve Thee here,
Till Thou shalt appear;

Then, Lord, saved by grace,
In yon happy place
I shall see Thy face;

Then, from sin quite free,
Heaven my home shall be,
There to dwell with Thee.

THE INFANT'S PRAYER. LORD JESUS, teach a child to pray, Who humbly kneels to Thee; And every night and every day My friend and Saviour be.

While here I live, give me Thy grace,

And, when I'm call'd to die,
Oh, take my soul to see Thy face,
And sing Thy praises high.

GOD IS IN HEAVEN.

GOD is in heaven!

Can He hear

A little prayer like mine?

Yes, thoughtful child, thou need'st not fear He listens unto thine.

God is in heaven!

Can He see

When I am doing wrong?

Yes, that He can; He looks at thee
All day, and all night long.

God is in heaven! Would He know
If I should tell a lie?

Yes, though thou saidst it very low,

He'd hear it in the sky.

God is in heaven!

Does He care,

Or is He good to me?

Yes, all thou hast to eat or wear

'Tis God that gives it thee.

God is in heaven! Can I

go

To thank Him for His care?

Not yet; but love Him here below,

And He will see it there.

God is in heaven! May I pray

To go there when I die?

Yes, seek His grace, and then, one day,

He'll call thee to the sky.

Mrs. Gilbert.

GOD WILL HEAR PRAYER.

WILL God, who made the earth and sea,
The night and shining day,
Regard a little child like me,
And listen when I pray?

If I am hungry, poor, and cold?
Then will He hear my cry?

And when I shall be sick and old,
Oh, then will God be nigh?

Yes, in His holy word we read
Of His unfailing love;

And when His mercy most we need,
His mercy He will prove.

To those who seek Him He is near;
He looks upon the heart;

And from the humble and sincere
He never will depart.

He sees our thoughts, our wishes knows,
He hears our faintest prayer;
And wheresoe'er the Christian goes,

He finds his Father there.

Then fear not hunger, cold, or pain;

But fear to disobey

That God who does your life sustain,

And guards you every day.
