AGENTS FOR NEW ENGLAND,

OTIS CLAPP & SON.

EVERY intelligent physician recognizes the Thermometer as one of the most important instruments for diagnosis; in fact, it cannot otherwise be regarded than as an indispensable auxiliary. Its importance, therefore, and its power to mislead if unreliable, render it the duty of every practitioner to exercise care in the selection of his instrument. To show the uncertainty concerning thermometers, we quote from the report of Prof. Leonard Waldo to the Board of Managers of the Winchester Observatory of Yale College :

"There have been comparatively few physicians' thermometers made in this country which have united accurate graduation of the scale with the requisite age of tube necessary to preclude further sensible changes; and there is little doubt that the great majority of physicians' thermometers now in use in the United States are from one half to two degrees too high in their indications."

Further he says, "The Observatory has been called upon within five months to certify about 1,200 thermometers from various parts of the country. The results of this work have demonstrated the gross inaccuracy of the cheaper clinical thermometers as commonly sold,"

etc.

Recognizing the impossibility of ascertaining the exact age, and the difficulty of determining whether a thermometer is properly constructed and printed, together with the fact that the market is flooded with cheap, poorly made, and valueless instruments, we have imported direct from one of the most celebrated manufacturers in London a line of self-registering clinical thermometers, both with and without the magnifying lens front.

Each thermometer is plainly marked "Otis Clapp & Son, Boston and Providence." These we now offer at the following prices :

No. 2. Straight, self-registering

No. 3. Straight, self-registering, and with Hicks's patent indestructible index

Several firms and individuals have been proceeded against for imitating our styles and counterfeiting our trade-marks. Examination shows that in the resemblance of the labels alone the comparison ceases, while analysis proves the article itself to be a "dishonest one," for in no instance does the incorporated medicinal ingredient conform with the officinal formula from which It purports to be made; notably in three different makes, where the article should contain 100 parts of the incorporated extract, but 10 or 15 equivalents can be discovered, or 85 to 90 per cent less than the formula laid down in the Dispensatory!

We also manufacture specially for Homœopaths in India-Rubber combination Aconite, Aconite and Belladonna, Belladonna, Bryonia, Sumach (Rhus Toxicodendron) and Witch Hazel, in yard rolls seven inches wide, and in porous form, size 5 x 7 inches. Also Court Plasters of Arnica, Arnica and Calendula, Calendula and Witch Hazel in yard rolls, seven inches wide and cut, size 2 x 3 inches. Also all Surgical, Antiseptic and Absorbent Dressings. Special formula plaster made to order.
