FROM THE STATE ENGINEER AND SURVEYOR, IN OFFICE OF THE STATE ENGINEER AND SURVEYOR, Hon. GEORGE B. SLOAN, Speaker of the Assembly. SIR.In reply to a resolution of the Assembly, passed January twenty-ninth, in the following words: "Resolved, That the State Engineer be respectfully requested to report to this House, within ten days, the number, rank and aggregate compensation, per month, of all persons employed in the engineer department of the eastern division of the New York State canals at the present time; the nature of the work upon which they are now engaged and where located, with his opinion upon the necessity of such employment, and, also, whether, in his opinion, the entire force cannot be reduced down to the employment of a division and resident engineer and a draughtsman, without detriment to the interest of the State." The State Engineer and Surveyor 'respectfully reports: That the accompanying statement contains the names, rank and monthly compensation of all the subordinate engineers employed upon the eastern division of the canals, during the month of January, 1877, together with the duties performed by each. |
