It was with the greatest reluctance I looked at it for a moment. The lawfulness of either abstaining or non-abstaining temperance is not affected by it; and the absorbing cares of medical practice, as well as the serious duties of life, leave me little time for philological or theological controversy. Of all the mean actions of degenerate humanity I know none meaner than the defence of sensual habits from the Bible.
