But he, knowing their thoughts, said unto them, Every kingdom divided against itself is brought to desolation; and a house divided against a house, falleth.

VER. 18.

Εἰ δὲ καὶ ὁ Σατανᾶς ἐφ' ἑαυτὸν διαμε ρίσθη, πώς σταθήσεται ἡ βασιλεία αὐτοῦ; ὅτι λέγετε, ἐν Βεελζεβοὺλ ἐκβάλλειν με τὰ δαιμόνια.

Αὐτὸς δὲ εἶπε· Μενούνγε μακάριοι οἱ ἀκούοντες τὸν λόγον τοῦ Θεοῦ, καὶ φυλάσσοντες αὐτόν.

But he said, Yea, a rather blessed are they that hear the word of God, and keep it.

VER. 29.

Τῶν δὲ ὄχλων ἐπαθροιζομένων ἤρξατο λέγειν· Ἡ γενεὰ αὕτη πονηρά ἐστι· σημεῖον ἐπιζητεῖ, καὶ σημεῖον οὐ δοθήσεται αὐτῇ, εἰ μὴ τὸ σημεῖον Ἰωνᾶ τοῦ προφήτου.

And when the people were gathered thick together, he began to say, a This is an evil generation: they seek a sign; and there shall no sign be given it but the sign of Jonas the prophet.

VER. 35.

Σκόπει οὖν μὴ τὸ φῶς, τὸ ἐν σοὶ, σκότος ἑστίν.

is evil, thy body also is |ishness with God: for it is written, He taketh the wise in their own craftiness. And again, the Lord knoweth the thoughts of the wise, that they are vain, iiì. 18-20. Because thou sayest, am rich, and inof nothing; and knowest not that creased with goods, and have need thou art wretched, and miserable, and poor, and blind, and naked: I counsel thee to buy of me gold tried in the fire, that thou mayest be rich; and white raiment, that thou mayest be clothed, and that the shame of thy nakedness do not appear; and anoint thine eyes with eye-salve, that thou mayest see, Rev. iii. 17, 18.

a There is a way that seemeth right unto a man; but the end thereof are the ways of death, Prov. xvi. 25. Seest thou a man wise in his own conceit? there is more hope of a fool than of him, xxvi. 12. Woe unto them that call evil good, and good evil; that put darkness for light, and light for darkness; that put bitter for sweet, and sweet for bitter! Woe unto them that are wise in their own

eyes, and prudent in their own sight! Isa. v. 20, 21. How do ye say, We are wise, and the law of the LORD is with us? Lo, certainly in vain made heit; the pen of the scribes is in vain. The wise men are ashamed, they are dismayed and taken: lo, they have rejected the word of the LORD; and what wisdom is in them? Jer. viii. 8, 9. And Jesus said, For judgment I am come into this world; that they which see not might see, and that they which see might be made blind. And some of the Pharisees which were with him heard these words, and said unto him, Are we blind also? John ix. 39, 40. Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools, And changed the glory of the uncorruptible God into an image made like to corruptible man, and to birds, and four-footed beasts, and creeping things, Rom. i. 22, 23. For it is written, I will destroy the wisdom of the wise, and will bring to nothing the understanding of the prudent. Where is the wise? where is the scribe? where is the disputer of this world? hath not God made foolish the wisdom of this world? For after that, in the wisdom of God, the world by wisdom knew not God, it pleased God by the foolishness of preaching to save them that believe, 1 Cor. i. 19-21. Let no man deceive himself. If any man among you seemeth to be wise in this world, let him become a fool, that he may be wise. For the wisdom of this world is fool

VER. 36.

Εἰ οὖν τὸ σῶμά σου ὅλον φωτεινὸν, μὴ ἔχον τι μέρος σκοτεινὸν, ἔσται φωτεινὸν ὅλον, ὡς ὅταν ὁ λύχνος τῇ ἀστραπὴ φωin σE

If thy whole body therefore be full of light, having no part dark, the whole shall be full of light, as when the right shining of a candle doth give thee light.

O how love I thy law! it is my meditation all the day. Thou, through thy commandments, hast made me wiser than mine enemies: for they are ever with me. I have more understanding than all my teachers: for thy testimonies are my meditation. I understand more than the ancients; because I keep thy precepts. I have refrained my feet from every evil way, that I might keep thy word. I have not departed from thy judgments: for thou hast taught me. How sweet are thy words unto my taste! yea, sweeter than honey to my mouth! Through thy precepts I get understanding: therefore I hate every false way. Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path, Psal. cxix. 97-105. A wise man will hear, and will increase learning; and a

man of understanding shall attain unto wise counsels, Prov. i. 5. My

if thou wilt receive my words, and hide my commandments with thee; so that thou incline thine ear unto wisdom, and apply thine heart to understanding; yea, if thou criest after knowledge, and liftest up thy voice for understanding: If thou seck

est her as silver, and searchest for her as for hid treasures; then shalt thou understand the fear of the LoRD, and find the knowledge of God. For the LoRD giveth wisdom : out of his mouth cometh knowledge and understanding. He layeth up sound wisdom for the righteous: he is a buckler to them that walk uprightly. He keepeth the paths of judgment, and preserveth the way of his saints. Then shalt thou understand righteousness, and judgment, and equity; yea, every good path. When wisdom entereth into thine heart, and knowledge is pleasant unto thy soul, discretion shall preserve thee, understanding shall keep thee; to deliver thee from the way of the evil man, from the man that speaketh froward things, ii. 1-12. But the path of the just is as the shining light, that shineth more and more unto the perfect day, iv. 18. Then shall we know, if we follow on to know the LORD: his going forth is prepared as the morning; and he shall come unto us as the rain, as the latter and former rain unto the earth, Hos. vi. 3. Jesus saith unto them, Have ye understood all these things? They say unto him, Yea, Lord. Then said he unto them, Therefore every Scribe which is instructed unto the kingdom of heaven, is like unto a man that is an householder, which bringeth forth out of his treasure things new and old, Matt. xiii. 51, 52. For he that hath, to him shall be given: and he that hath not, from him shall be taken even that which he hath, Mark iv. 25.

VER. 37.

Ἐν δὲ τῷ λαλῆσαι, ἠρώτα αὐτὸν Φαρισαῖός τις ὅπως ἀριστήση παρ' αὐτῷ· Εl. σελθὼν δὲ ἀνέπεσεν.

And as he spake, a certain a Pharisee besought him to dine with him: and he went in, and sat down to meat.

VER. 38.

ἀποδεκατοῦσε τὸ ἡδύοσμον καὶ τὸ πήγα Αλλ ̓ οὐαὶ ὑμῖν τοῖς Φαρισαίοις, ὅτι νῦν καὶ πᾶν λάχανον, καὶ παρέρχεσθε τὴν κρίσιν καὶ τὴν ἀγάπην τοῦ Θεοῦ· ταῦτα ἔδει ποιῆσαι. κακεῖνα μὴ ἀφιέναι.

VER. 43.

Οὐαὶ ὑμῖν τοῖς Φαρισαίοις, ὅτι ἀγαπᾶτε τὴν πρωτοκαθεδρίαν ἐν ταῖς συναγωγαῖς, καὶ τοὺς ἀσπασμοὺ ἐν ταῖς ἀγοραῖς.

Woe unto you, Pharisees! for a ye love the uppermost seats in the synagogues, and greetings in the markets.

VER. 44.

Woe unto you, Scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye are as graves which appear not, and the men that walk over them are not aware of them.

VER. 45.

̓Αποκριθεὶς δέ τις τῶν νομικῶν, λέγει αὐτῷ· Διδάσκαλε, ταῦτα λέγων καὶ ἡμᾶς ὑβρίζεις.

Then answered one of the Lawyers, and said unto him, Master, thus saying, thou reproachest us also.

Ο δὲ εἶπε· Καὶ ὑμῖν τοῖς νομικοῖς οὐαὶ, ὅτι φορτίζετε τοὺς ἀνθρώπους φορτία δυσ

[For they bind heavy burdens, and grievous to be borne, and lay them on men's shoulders; but they themselves will not move them with one of their fingers, Matt. xxiii. 4.]

Truly ye bear witness that ye allow the deeds of your fathers: for they indeed killed them, and ye build their sepulchres.
