EIGHTH WEEK.

Lesson 36-Learn for Monday Morning.

TIME.

Time speeds away-away-away:
Another hour-another day
Another month-another year-
Drop from us like the leaflets sear,
Drop like the life-blood from our
hearts;

The rose-bloom from the cheek de-
parts,

The tresses from the temples fall,
The eye grows dim and strange to all.
Time speeds away-away-away,
Like torrent in a stormy day;
He undermines the stately tower,

And sweeps from our distracted breast

The friends that loved-the friends
that blest;

And leaves us weeping on the shore,
To which they can return no more.
Time speeds away-away-away:
No eagle through the skies of day,
No wind along the hills can flee
So swiftly or so smooth as he :
Like fiery steed, from stage to stage,
He bears us on from youth to age;
Then plunges in the fearful sea

Uproots the tree, and snaps the flower, (Of fathomless Eternity.

Lesson 37.-Tuesday.-Geography. Write and Learn. LAKES.-Scotland is a land of Lakes and Mountains. The best known are Loch Lomond, Loch Ka-trine, Loch Awe, Loch Le'-ven, and Lochs Locky and Ness.

Loch Lo-mond, to the west of Ben Lomond, is about 24 miles long, and is the largest lake in Great Britain. It contains several beautiful island, and its waters are discharged into the Clyde by the R. Leven.

Loch Katrine lies to the cast of Ben Lomond. It is about two miles long and very deep. Towards the east is the beautiful district of the Trossachs, made famous in Sir Walter Scott's poem of the "Lady of the Lake." It is emptied by the Teith into the Forth.

Loch Awe, in Argyle, is the next lake in size to Loch Lomond. It is long and narrow, and is emptied into Loch Etive, an arm of Loch Linnhe.

Loch Leven, in Kinross, is a small oval lake, and is chiefly interesting for its castle, on an island, in which Mary Queen of Scots was kept prisoner, and from which she escaped in 1568. Lochs Locky and Ness are situated in Glenmore. They form part of the Caledonian Canal, which extends from Moray Frith and Inverness on the east, to Loch Eil on the west. It was begun in 1805 and opened in 1822, and was intended to obviate the passage of ships round the north coast; but it is shallow in parts and is little used.

1558 Elizabeth, half-sister of Mary, and daughter of Henry VIII., reigned from 1558 to 1603.

1558 The Protestant religion was re-established in England. 1568 Mary Queen of Scots escaped from Scotland and fled into England. She was imprisoned by Elizabeth's order, and after a long confinement of nineteen years was beheaded.

1588 On Elizabeth's refusal to marry Philip of Spain, he fitted out an immense fleet of 130 vessels, called the Invincible Armada It was dispersed and defeated.

1600 A company established to trade to the East Indies, and hence called the East India Company. Next year, Essex, the queen's favourite, was beheaded for plotting against the queen.

Elizabeth was rather despotic, but her acts were generally founded on sound judgment. Her reign is among the brightest in our annals.

Lesson 41.-Learn for Monday Morning.

REVERENCE.

In youth impress your minds with reverence for everything that is sacred. Let no wantonness of youthful spirits, no compliance with the intemperate mirth of others, ever betray you into profaneness. Besides the guilt which is thereby incurred, nothing gives a more odious appearance of petulance and presumption to youth than the affectation of treating religion with levity. Instead of being an evidence of superior understanding, it discovers a pert and shallow mind, which presumes to make light of what the rest of mankind revere. At the same time, you are not to imagine, that when exhorted to be religious, you are called upon to become more formal and solemn in your manners than others of the same years, or to erect yourselves into supercilious reprovers of those around you. The spirit of true religion breathes gentleness and affability.-Blair.

Lesson 44.-Thursday.-Grammar. Learn and Write. EXTENSION OF THE PREDICATE.

The PREDICATE may be enlarged or extended, and its meaning may be modified.

The word that modifies the meaning of a verb is an adverb; hence

The predicate may be extended by an adverb, or by any words used as an adverb.

The predicate may be expanded by

(1) Ân adverb

He walks slowly.

(2) A prepositional phrase

The bird flew into a tree.

(3) A noun phrase

They fought hand to hand.

(4) A participle

The messenger came running.

NOTE. Generally any word or phrase that answers to the question-How? When? or Where? after the verb, is an extension of the predicate.

After the adverb the prepositional phrase is the most common extension of the predicate.

The noun phrase may generally be reduced to a prepositional one by supplying an understood preposition.

They fought hand to hand from hand to hand.

Ex. 20. Point out the extensions of predicates and their kind.-John learns quickly. He perspires with running. He came laughing. Tom ran home. The milkmaid carried the pail upon her head. TENTH WEEK.

Lesson 46.-Learn for Monday Morning.
OUR DUTY HERE,

What is our duty here? To tend
From good to better-thence the
best;

Grateful to drink life's cup-then bend

Unmurmuring to our bed of rest; To pluck the flowers that round us blow,

Scattering our fragrance as we go.

And so to live, that when the sun
Of our existence sinks in night,
Memorials sweet of mercies done

May shrine our names in mem-
ory's light;

And the blest seeds we scattered
bloom

A hundred fold in days to come.
Bowring.

TO-MORROW.

To-morrow you will live, you always cry:

In what far country does this morrow lie,

That 'tis so mighty long ere it arrive? Beyond the Indies does this morrow live?

'Tis so far-fetch't, this morrow, that I fear

Twill be both very old and very dear.

"To-morrow I will live," the fool doth say;

To-day itself, too late; the wise lived yesterday!
