THE following Guide to the usual time of naming for the principal Stakes in England which appear in the Book Calendar as closed Stakes, has been compiled in consequence of the frequent inquiries which are made on the subject. Further particulars of these Stakes, and of the Stakes still unclosed, will be found in the body of the work. This Guide is confined to the principal annual Stakes, the time of closing which is so established by custom, as to make it improbable that it will be changed; still, however, it is right to observe that, as the time of closing and naming for every Stake is a part of the conditions of the race to be fixed by the Stewards or other parties proposing the same, and liable to be altered at their discretion, this Table cannot be regarded as a final and official announcement, nor supersede the necessity of reference to the conditions of the several races, as they are advertised in succession in the Sheet Calendar, before the time of closing. Produce Stakes, in general, close on the 1st of January. Horses take their ages from the 1st of January; this is especially necessary to be noticed, as regards the Stakes which close on that day. When a Stake is advertised to close in any Newmarket Meeting, it is always understood that it remains open till the Saturday night of that week. In addition to the above, there are usually some Stakes for foals and yearlings to run at 2 or 3 yrs old proposed during the year, to close in the Newmarket July and Houghton Meetings, and on the 1st of January. * This Stake for the present year did not fill on the 1st of January last, and is reopened till the 1st of March.
