not all these who speak Galileans? And how does every one of us hear them speaking in our own language, in which we were born? Parthians, Medes, and Elamites, dwellers in Jewish Mesopotamia and in Cappadocia, in Pontus and in Asia Minor, in Phrygia and Pamphylia, in Egypt and the parts of Libya about Cyrene, and Romans, who dwell among us, whether Jews or proselytes, Cretans also and Arabians, we do hear them speak in our own language, of the wonderful works of God." And they were all amazed, and in doubt, saying one to another, "What meaneth this?" Others, mocking, said, "These men are full of new wine."

But Peter, standing up with the eleven,* lifted up his voice and said, "Ye men of Judæa, and ye who are inhabitants of Jerusalem, be this known

unto you, and hearken unto my words; for these men are not drunken as ye suppose, seeing it is but the third hour of the day" (that is, nine o'clock in the morning). "But this is that which was spoken by the prophet Joel, And it shall come to pass in the last days, (saith God,) I will pour out my spirit upon all flesh; and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams.' Ye men of Israel, hear these words; Jesus of Nazareth, a man approved of God among you by miracles, and wonders, and signs, which God did by him in the midst of you, as ye yourselves also know; him, being delivered up by the determined counsel and foreknowledge of God, ye have taken, and by wicked hands have crucified and slain; but God hath raised him up, having loosed the bonds of the grave, for it was not possible that he should be holden

by it. This Jesus hath God raised up, whereof we all are witnesses. Therefore, being exalted to sit at the right hand of God, and having received from the Father the promise of the Holy Spirit, he hath shed forth this, which ye now see and hear. For David did not ascend into heaven; yet he said, The Lord said unto my Lord, Sit thou on my right hand, till I make thy enemies thy footstool.' Therefore let all the house of Israel know assuredly, that God hath made that same Jesus, whom ye have crucified, both Lord and Christ."

And when they heard this, they were pricked in their hearts, and said unto Peter, and to the rest of the Apostles, "Men and brethren, what shall we do ?" Then Peter said unto them, "Repent, and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ, for the remission of sins; and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit, for the promise

is unto you and to your children, and to all that are afar off, even to as many as the Lord our God shall call."

And with many other words did he testify and exhort, saying, "Save yourselves from this perverse generation." Then they that gladly received his word were baptized; and the same day there were added unto them about three thousand souls. And they continued steadfast in the Apostles' doctrine and fellowship, and in breaking of bread, and in prayer.

And fear came upon every one of them; and many wonders and signs were done by the Apostles. All they that believed were together, and had all things in common; and sold their possessions and goods, and parted them to all, as every man had need. And continuing daily with one accord in the temple, and breaking bread from house to house, they did eat meat with gladness and singleness of heart, praising God, and having

THE CURE OF THE MAN LAME FROM HIS BIRTH.

(Acts iii. 1-20.)

Now Peter and John went up together into the temple, at the hour of prayer, which was the ninth hour. And there was brought thither a certain man lame from his birth, whom they laid daily at the gate of the Temple, which is called Beautiful, to ask alms of them that entered into the temple. He seeing Peter and John about to go into the temple, asked alms. Then Peter, fixing his eyes upon him, with John, said, "Look on us." And he gave heed unto them, expecting to receive something from them. But Peter said, "Silver and gold have I
