BE it remembered, That on the twent third day of November, in the forty-second year of the independence of the United

States of America, A. D. 1817, GEORGE LOCHMAN, A.M. of the said district, hath deposited in this office, the title of a book, the right whereof he clairs as proprietor, in the words following, to wit:

In conformity to the act of the congress of the U. nited States, intituled, " An act for the encouragement of learning by securing the copies of maps, charts and books, to the authors and proprietors of such copies during the times therein, mentioned." And also to the act entitled, “ An act supplementary to an act, entitled, “ And act for the encouragement of learning by securiug the copies of maps, charts and books to the authors and proprietors of such copies during the times therein mentioned," and extending the benefits thereof to the arts of designing, engraving, and etching historical and other prints.

THE history, doctrines and discipline of the Evangelical Lutheran Church, are very little known among the English portion of the United States ; because the writers on those subjects have generally written in Latin or German, and because their doctrines have hitherto been mostly taught and preach. ed in the German language. It was this consideration, that induced the author to write these pages in the English language. He is no bigot-no enemy to any christian denomination whatever ; believing that the Lord hath his people among them all, and that all true christians, taken together from the different branches or denominations of the several churches, constitute “the one holy catholic christian church.” But sincerely believing the tenets held and taught by Lu. ther and his followers to agree with the scriptures, and knowing that those tenets have been misrepresented hv some
