This handsome little book has been prepared at the suggestion of the publishers to satisfy the popular and professional demand for information on this fascinating subject. It is based upon the actual experience of Dr. Morton, and the many half-tone illustrations which enhance

the value of the book have been made from his negatives without retouching. The first chapters of the book treat of those principles of electricity involved in the production of the proper current. The different forms of Crookes tubes are described and their uses explained. The fluoroscope is fully explained and the necessary photographic paratus described. Then follow chapters on the choice of operation and the methods of photographing the invisible. Then there are chapters devoted to the surgical value and uses of the X-rays, and the volume closes with a series of most beautiful and interesting halftone reproductions of skiagraphs. AMONG THE EXHIBITS.

We have already intimated that the exhibits at this convention are worth more than a casual glance. The houses represented have manifested a great deal of enterprise, not only in the bare fact that they have made the exhibits, but even more in the expense and care that they have incurred in installing them. The exhibits represent the latest and most modern ideas and the visiting surgeons are availing themselves of this exceptional opportunity to investigate and study the embodiment of these ideas. The local committee of arrangements have provided everything that the heart can desire in the way of good light, large floor space and like facilities. The exhibitors have already done their part well, and it is gratifying to know that the railway surgeons are not in the least behind the other two parties to the agreement in doing their part. The exhibitors inform us that they are greatly pleased with the attention they have thus far received, and if the sales made both directly and indirectly amount to anything like what the present prospects foreshadow, a precedent will have been established which will make it well nigh suicidal for any live house in the instrument or pharmaceutical line to stay away from future conventions of the National Association of Railway Surgeons.

Early yesterday morning the official photographer of The Railway Surgeon was hard at work taking photographs of some of the more important exhibits, and the result of his work appears on these pages in the shape of

half-tone engravings, from which the railway surgeons who were not able to be present at the meeting will get a good general idea of what the exhibits look like.

The exhibit of Eli Lilly & Co. of Indianapolis, Ind., is in charge of Mr. J. K. Lilly, James H. Holman, A. S. Maynard and S. M. Strohecker, and is attracting a great deal of

attention. The pharmaceutical products of the Lilly laboratories are well known to all members of the profession everywhere, and the new department for the study of formaldehyde, which has recently been opened, will doubtless soon be equally well known. The exhibit of formaldehyde generators is a most attractive one and is extremely interesting. The principle of the production of a gas directly from wood alcohol in the generator is different from methods hitherto used, and is described as formation by incomplete combustion. A wick fed by wood alcohol burns continuously, the flame being conducted upward into a metallic converting tube which yields in its products of incomplete combustion a large percentage of formaldehyde. The firm are distributing a well prepared pamphlet which contains a resume of the literature on formaldehyde, together with reports of a series of investigations made by Dr. Potter and Prof. Burrage. The firm, we are informed, have a corps of representatives visiting the different cities of this country and Europe, who give demonstrations with the Moffatt formaldehyde generator for the benefit of those interested in the subject. Parties desiring to investigate

have only to advise the firm at Indianapolis, when one of these representatives will call. In this exhibit is also to be found a simple device for sterilizing sutures, which goes with the generator, and by which sutures of all kinds, as well as bandages, may be completely sterilized in a few moments.

Directly opposite the entrance to the exhibit hall on the south side of the building is the exhibit of the Searle & Hereth Company of Chicago, which contains a fine display of pharmaceuticals produced by the company. This house, which was established only seven years ago, has made most remarkable strides in the development of a large trade and now has one of the most extensive establishments in the country. Their laboratory at the corner of Wells and Illinois streets is easily accessible by the cable line, and the company extends an invitation to all the members of the Association to visit it for a thorough inspection. It is complete in all the apparatus necessary for the production of a full line of pharmaceuticals, from the fundamental fluid extract to the highest quality of friable sugar-coated tablets. Mr. G. D. Searle, the president of the company, Mr. O. T. Eastman, the secretary, and Mr. F. E. Taft are constantly in attendance
