L. M.

2 "Permit them to approach," he cries,
Nor scorn their humble name;

66

For 'twas to bless such souls as these
The Lord of glory came.

3 He leads them to the heavenly streams,
Where living waters flow;

And guides them to the fruitful fields,
Where trees of knowledge grow.

4 The feeblest lambs amid the flock,
Shall be the Shepherd's care;
While folded in the Saviour's arms,
They're safe from every snare.

[blocks in formation]

"Suffer little children to come unto me."

1 Most Holy God, we bring to Thee
These little ones that Thou hast given,
And ask, that they may ever be

Thy children here, and Thine in Heaven.

2 O, take them in Thy gracious arms, And fold them fondly to Thy breast; And there, secure from all alarms,

Serene and sweet shall be their rest.

3 0, save them from the world's control,
And keep their feet in that sure way
Where sin can never soil the soul,
And life is but a pleasant day.

4 Dear Father, let Thy blessing now
Descend like water from above,
That those who at Thine altar bow,
May be baptized in Thý pure love!

"And he saw the heavens opened, and the Spirit like a dove descending upon him."

1 Now, with baptismal waters touched,
Thy children, Father, see!

While heart, and soul, and mind, and strength,
They consecrate to Thee!

2 Send down on them Thy holy dove,
Thy Spirit undefiled;

Be each in faith, and hope, and love,
Thy well-beloved child!

3 0, help them in the wilderness
To conquer doubt and sin;

S. M.

To see above them still Thy peace,
And hear Thy voice within!

1 The sparrow finds a home,

The little bird a nest;

Deep in Thy dwelling, Lord, they come,
And fold themselves to rest.

2 And shall we be afraid,

Thy little ones, to come,

And find within Thine altar's shade,
And 'neath Thy wings, a home ?

3 Here guard us as Thine eye,
Here keep us without spot,

That when the spoiler passeth by,
His hand may touch us not.

AFTER BAPTISM-HEAVEN.

4 Here nerve our souls with might,
Here nurse them with Thy love,
Here plume them for their final flight,
To blessedness above!

AFTER BAPTISM,

64.

"Thou, O God, hast heard my vows." 1 O happy bond, that seals my vows To Him who claims my highest love! Let cheerful anthems fill His house, While to His altar now I move.

2 'Tis done the holy work is done;
I am my Lord's, and He is mine;
He drew me, and I followed on,

Glad to confess the voice divine.

3 High heaven, that heard the solemn vow, That vow renewed shall daily hear;

P. M.

Till in life's latest hour I bow,

And bless in death a bond so dear.

HEAVEN.

65.

"It doth not yet appear what we shall be."

1 There is a happy land,

Far, far away,
Where saints in glory stand,
Bright, bright as day;

Oh, how they sweetly sing,
Worthy is the Saviour King,
Loud let his praises ring,

Praise, praise for aye!

C. M.

2 Come to that happy land,
Come, come away;

Why will ye doubting stand,
Why still delay ?

Oh, we shall happy be,

When, from sin and sorrow free,
Lord, we shall live with thee,
Blest, blest for aye.

3 Bright, in that happy land,
Beams every eye;
Kept by a Father's hand,
Love can not die.
Oh, then, to glory run,

Be a crown and kingdom won,
And, bright above the sun,
We reign for aye.

[blocks in formation]

"At thy right hand there are pleasures forever more."

1 "Twere vain to think what Heaven will be,
And wish that we could know,

If lovely things will charm us there,
Such as we prize below.

2 For mortal eye hath never seen,
Nor mortal eye shall see,

The love and joy laid up in store
With Christ eternally.

3 Heaven is a holy, happy place,
And 'tis enough to know,

Where angels sing, and Jesus dwells,
Unfailing pleasures flow.

[blocks in formation]

"These are they which came out of great tribulation." 1 Who are these in bright array,

S. M.

This exulting, countless throng,
Round the altar, night and day,
Singing their triumphant song?
"Worthy is the Lamb, once slain,
Blessing, honor, glory, power,
Wisdom, riches, to obtain,

New dominion every hour."

2 These through fiery trials trod;
These from great affliction came;
Now, before the throne of God,
Sealed with his almighty name;
Clad in raiment pure and white,
Victor-palms in every hand,
Through their great Redeemer's might,
More than conquerors they stand.

3 Hunger, thirst, disease, unknown,
On immortal fruits they feed;
Them the Lamb, amidst the throne,
Shall to living fountains lead:
Joy and gladness banish sighs;
Perfect love dispels all fears;
And forever from their eyes

God shall wipe away their tears.

68. *MRS. M. A. H. SHULTS.

"We have a building of God, a house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens."

1 Now o'er earth's smiling face
Our eyes delighted roam,

But this is not our dwelling-place,
We have another home.
