Praise to Jehovah! His name be adored! Praise the Creator! rejoice in the Lord! Great is His power, beyond estimation;

But greater His goodness, which gives life its worth;

His goodness is shown in the work of creation; And love to our Maker His love should call forth.

Praise to Jehovah! His name be adored!
Praise the Creator! rejoice in the Lord!

30.

"I will bless Thy name for ever and ever."

1 Blessed be Thy name forever,

Thou of life the Guard and Giver!
Thou canst shield Thy creatures sleeping,
Dry the eyes of all the weeping:

2 Thou canst give the balm of gladness
To the heart oppressed with sadness:
Thou canst fill the poor and lowly
With a joy serene and holy.

3 Thou who slumberest not nor sleepest,
Blest are they Thou kindly keepest:
God of life! that fade shall never,
Blessed be Thy name forever!

"What wilt Thou have me to do?"

1 Dear Father, take me to Thy love,
And ever keep me there,

That I may know Thy peace,-above,
The reach of earthly care.

2 O, I can trust Him who provides
The thirsty ground with dew,

Whose hand the world upholds and guides,
For He is good and true.

3 For the same hand that smites with pain, And sends the wintry snows,

Will mould the frozen clod again
Into the summer rose.

4 My soul is melted by that love,
So tender and so true;

I can but cry, my Lord and God,
What wilt Thou have me do?

[blocks in formation]

"Pray without ceasing."

1 Go, when the morning shineth,
Go, when the noon is bright,
Go, when the eve declineth,
Go, in the hush of night;
Go, with pure mind and feeling,
Cast earthly thought away,
And in thy chamber, kneeling,
Do thou in secret pray.

2 O, not a joy nor blessing
With this can we compare,
The power that God hath given us
To pour our souls in prayer!
Whene'er thou pin'st in sadness,
Before His footstool fall;
Remember in thy gladness,
His love who gave thee all.

[blocks in formation]

"We know not what we should pray for as we ought."

P. M.

1 Lord, teach us how to pray,
And give us hearts to ask,
Or all we seek, or think, or say,
Will prove a weary task.

2 Thy holy Spirit send.

Our bosoms to inspire;

Then shall our praise to Thee ascend,

With pure and warm desire.

"Lord, teach us to pray."

1 Brothers, sisters, when the morning
In the east is brightly dawning,
And its golden rays are stealing

Through our casement-Oh, then kneeling,
Let us pray!

2 When the light of day is waning,
And its farewell hues are staining
Every tree, and shrub, and flower,
In that rich, that gorgeous hour,
Let us pray!

3 When her lips, fond caresses,
On our cheek our mother presses,
As her arms around us wreathing,
She, the dear "good night" is breathing,
Let us pray!

4 Let us pray that on the morrow,

God will shield our hearts from sorrow,
And though life be ever near us —

He is kind, and He will hear us,

When we pray!

GOD IN NATURE.

35.

*ALICE CARY.

"The kingdom of God is within you."

1 O God, we see and feel Thy might,
In all that nature shows;

The strong wind's breath, the tender light
That opes the joyous rose.

2 But life, with what we call its laws,
And all things fair and bright,
Are curtains which Thy mercy draws,
To shield us from the light.

3 We falter, when we try to seek

The world which these conceal,

We stammer, when we fain would speak
The reverence that we feel.

4 We pray not now, for Thee to give
That heaven which shall appear:
We only cry-help us to live
Within Thy kingdom here!

"The Lord hath made all things."

1 On the blue, tranquil sea,
That laves the shining sand,
On every budding shrub and tree,
We trace our Father's hand.

2 The song of every bird

That makes the woods rejoice,
Seems to our heart, whenever heard,
An echo of His voice,

L. M.

3 The mountains grand and still,
The stars amid the skies,

The sparkling of the tiniest rill,
Thy gracious hand supplies.

4 The holy hush of night,

That moves the soul to prayer,
The ruddy tints of morning light;
All tell us of Thy care.

5 Since all to Thee we owe,
We will withhold no part,
But yield Thee, with a grateful glow,
Each young and trusting heart.

[blocks in formation]

"My son, give me thine heart."

1 Give me thy heart, O thoughtless youth,
Ere yet the evil days draw near!
O, early seek the ways of truth,

Ere hope grow dim, ere life be drear!
2 Give me thine heart! The yoke I lay
Upon thy youthful neck is light;
My burden grows from day to day,

More dear to sense, more fair to sight!

3 Come to me now! The crown I press
Upon thy brow, hath not a thorn;
A crown so rare, to soothe and bless,
No royal head hath ever worn!

4 Come to me now! This hour, decide,—
And be thine offering full and free:
Oh, for His sake, who for thee died,
My wandering child, come home to me!
