Then Naomi intreated her to return.

And Ruth said unto her, "Intreat me not to leave thee. Whither thou goest, I will go: thy people shall be my people, and thy God my God. Where thou diest will I die, and there be buried. Death alone shall part thee and me."

So they went together, and arrived at Bethlehem in the time of the barley harvest. And Ruth went to glean in the field of her kinsman boaz.

And when he learnt who she was, he said, "Go not to glean in any other field, but continue near to my maidens, and partake of their dinner."

And she gleaned there during the harvest.

Then Boaz said unto her, "The Lord reward thee for all the kindness thou hast shewn to thy mother-in-law. For all the people do know that thou art a virtuous And Boaz was

30. The History of Samuel,
1st Part.

There was a woman named Hannah, the wife of Elkanah, of the tribe of Ephraim, and she was barren. And she prayed unto the Lord, saying, "If thou wilt give me a man child, then I will devote him to the Lord all the days of his life.

And she bare a son, and called his name Samuel. And when she had weaned him she carried him to Eli, the High Priest, that he might serve the Lord in his holy temple.

And the child did minister unto the Lord, girded with a linen Ephod: also his mother made him a little coat, and brought it to him from year to year, when she came to offer the yearly sacrifice. 31. The History of Samuel, 2nd Part.

And as Samuel slept in the temple, the Lord called Samuel. And he answered, "Here am I," and ran to Eli, and said, "Here am I, for thou calledst me."

And Eli said, "I called not ;

lie down again. Then the Lord called Samuel a second, and a third time; and Samuel went as before to Eli,

Then Eli perceived that the Lord had called the child. Therefore he said to him, "Go, lie down and if he call thee, say, Speak Lord for thy servant heareth." And the Lord called Samuelagain: then he answered, "Speak for thy servant heareth.

Then the Lord said to Samuel, "I will punish the house of Eli for ever; because his sons have done very wickedly; and he knew thereof, and yet restrained them

not."

And Samuel feared to tell Eli: but Eli commanded him to hide nothing from him. Then he told him all, and

hid nothing from him; and Eli said, "It is the Lord; let him do what seemeth him good.

32. Tho History of Samuel, 3rd Part.

And the Philistines made war against the children of Israel; and Israel was smitten and the two sons of Eli were slain. And when Eli heard it, he fell from his seat backwards and died.

And Samuel said unto all the house of Israel; "If ye do return unto the Lord with all your hearts, put away all strange gods, and prepare your hearts to serve the Lord; and he will deliver you from the hands of the Philistines."
