But the angel of the LORD called unto him out of Heaven, and said, "Lay not thine hand upon the lad, neither do any thing unto him. For now I know that thou fearest GOD; seeing thou hast not withheld thy son, thine only son.

Then Abraham lifted up his eyes, and looked; and behold behind him a ram caught in a thicket by his horns. And Abraham went and took the ram, and offered him up for a burnt offering instead of his son.

15. The Birth of Esau and Jacob.

And when Isaac was forty years old, he took to wife Rebekah, the daughter of Bethuel, who was the nephew of Abraham: and he had by

her two sons, Esau, and Jacob. Esau was the eldest son, but he despised his birthright, and sold it to Jacob, his brother, for a mess of pottage.

Then Jacob fearing his brother's anger, fled from his father's house, and went to Laban, the brother of Rebekah his mother. his way, the LORD appeared to him in a dream, and said, "I am the LORD GOD of Abraham, thy father, and the God of Isaac. The land whereupon thou liest, to thee will I give it, and to thy seed: and thy seed shall be as the dust of the earth; and in thee and in thy seed shall all the families of the earth be blessed."

16. The twelve Sons of Jacob.

And Jacob had twelve sons; and the names of them were, Reuben, Simeon, Levi, Judah, Dan, Napthali, Gad, Asher, Issachar, Zebulun, Joseph, and Benjamin.

And God said unto Jacob, "Arise, go up to Bethel and dwell there; and make there an altar unto God, that appeared unto thee when thou fleddest from the face of Esau thy brother." Then Jacob obeyed the word of the Lord.

And the Lord said again unto him, "Thy name shall be called Israel. A nation, and many nations shall be of thee; and kings shall come out of thy loins. And the land which I gave to Abraham and Isaac, to thee will I

give it, and to thy seed after thee will I give the land. 17. The History of Joseph, 1st Part.

Now Israel loved Joseph more than all his children; and he made him a coat of many colours. And when his brethren saw that their father loved him more than all his brethren, they hated him, and could not speak peaceably unto him.

And his brethren went to feed their father's flock in Shechem. And Israel said unto Joseph, "Go, I pray thee, see whether it be well with thy brethren, and well with the flocks; and bring me word again.”

And when they saw Joseph afar off, even before he came near unto them, they con

spired against him to slay him. Then Reuben said unto them, "shed no blood; but cast him into this pit, that is in the wilderness, and lay no hand upon him." For he sought to save him out of their hands and deliver him to his father again. And when Joseph came up to his brethren, they stripped him of his coat, and cast him into the pit; and they set down to eat bread.
