P R E F A C E.
TN presenting another volume to the Public, we
feel no small satisfaction in having been able to fulfil our promise of “ giving a compact and ener- , getic account of the French revolution down to the completion of the national constitution.” To that inportant subject, indeed, we profess to have been particularly attentive, and we mast add that we have found that part of our work a most laborious and dificult task. So much has the spirit of party intermixed itself in the relation of these transactions, that there is not to be found either in French or English a fair and honest narrative. In this
particular, nothing has appeared but the most incorrect and inaccurate conjectures, for they so ought rather to be called than narratives ; wretched compilations, which are as applicable to the affairs of Otaheite as to those of France.
Much of the history which we present to our readers has been collected from, or at least corroborated by, the testimony of eye-witnesses, and the rest is drawn from the journals of the national as
