Entered, according to Act of Congress, in the year 1855, by
TICKNOR AND FIELDS,
In the Clerk's Office of the District Court of the District of Massachusetts,
THESE Ballads have been written during the past fifteen years, and are now gathered by the author from his own books, and the various periodicals in which the pieces appeared originally. They are published simultaneously in England and America, – where a public, which has been interested in the writer's prose stories, he hopes may be kindly disposed to his little volume of verses.
