OF WISCONSIN. BY MRS. ELLET, AUTHOR OF "THE WOMEN OF THE AMERICAN REVOLUTION. BAKER AND SCRIBNER, 145 NASSAU STREET AND 36 PARK ROW. 1849. Entered according to Act of Congress in the year 1849, by BAKER AND SCRIBNER, In the Clerk's Office of the District Court of the United States for the Southern Printed by 201 William street. BU45 -E45 PREFACE. In the following selection from the traditions of European countries, care has been taken to choose only such as have never, to the writer's knowledge, been presented before in an English dress. The collection of J. P. LYSER has been most used, though something has been gleaned from other German works on the subject. Few of the stories are mere translations, but in constructing a form in which to embody the legend, all embellishment that could impair its simplicity has been carefully excluded. The only liberty ventured on, is the arrangement of the incidents in an artistic shape, and a little indulgence in description where it seemed allowable. |
