What must you believe, if you would renounce and overcome these enemies?

I must believe all the articles of the Christian faith; and this is the second thing my godfathers and godmothers promised for me.

"Whatsoever is born of God, overcometh the world; and this is the victory that overcometh the world, even our faith. Who is he that overcometh the world, but he that believeth that Jesus is the son of God.' 1 John v. 4, 5.

Where are these articles of the Christian faith to be found?

In the Scriptures of truth, which were written by holy men of God, inspired by the Holy Ghost.

"From a child thou hast known the holy Scriptures, which are able to make thee wise unto salvation, through faith which is in Christ Jesus. All Scripture is given by inspiration of God." 2 Tim. iii. 15, 16.

Where are these articles summed up in short?
In the Apostles' creed.

"Ye are built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ himself being the chief corner stone. Eph. ii. 20.

What is it to believe these articles of the Christian faith?

To receive them into my heart as the truths of God, and to live according to them.

"These all died in faith, not having received the promises, but having seen them afar off, and were persuaded of them, and embraced them, and confessed that they were strangers and pilgrims on the earth." Heb. xi. 13.

What is the third thing your godfathers and godmothers promised for you in your baptism?

That I should keep God's holy will and commandments, and walk in the same all the days of my life.

"That the righteousness of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit." Rom. viii. 4.

"Walk worthy of God, who hath called you unto his kingdom and glory." 1 Thes. ii. 12.

How may we obtain the knowledge of God's holy will and commandments?

God's holy will and commandments are made known to us in the Bible, which is the word of God.

"All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: that the man of God may be perfect, thoroughly furnished unto all good works." 2 Tim. iii. 16, 17.

How long are you required to walk in the way of God's commandments?

All the days of my life.

"For it had been better for them not to have known the way of righteousness, than after they

have known it, to turn from the holy commandment delivered unto them." 2 Pet. ii. 21.

Do you not think that you are bound to believe, and to do as they have promised for you?

Yes, verily; and by God's help, so I will. And I heartily thank our heavenly Father, that he hath called me to this state of salvation, through Jesus Christ our Saviour. And I pray unto God to give me his grace, that I may continue in the same unto my life's end.

"For by grace are ye saved, through faith; and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God." Eph. ii. 8.

Why are you bound to do these things?

I am bound by the solemn promise and vow, made for me at my baptism.

"If any man draw back, my soul shall have no pleasure in him." Heb. x. 38.

Was this engagement, made for you in your infancy, of any benefit or advantage to you?

It was for my best welfare. Without repentance, or renouncing the devil, the world, and the flesh; and without faith, and holiness, I cannot share in the blessings of salvation, but must be for ever miserable.

66

Except ye repent, ye shall all likewise perish."

Luke xiii. 3.

"He that believeth not, shall be damned." Mark xvi. 16.

"Without holiness no man shall see the Lord." Heb. xii. 14.

Whose help must you have, to fulfil these engagements?

The help of God.

"Not that we are sufficient of ourselves; but our sufficiency is of God." 2 Cor. iii. 5.

What do you mean by saying you are called to a state of salvation?

That, having been baptized, I am by profession a member of Christ's church, and am considered in a state of salvation.

"He that believeth, and is baptized, shall be saved." Mark. xvi. 16.

How came you to be baptized, before you were old enough to understand the duties and blessings of baptism?

My godfathers and godmothers made a solemn profession of repentance, faith, and holiness, in my name; and Jesus said, "Suffer the little children to come unto me, and forbid them not; for of such is the kingdom of God." Mark x. 14.

Who called you to this state of salvation?
God our heavenly Father.

"Who hath saved us, and called us with a holy calling." 2 Tim. i. 9.

Through whom are you called to it?

Through Jesus Christ our Saviour.

"The God of all grace, hath called us unto his eternal glory by Christ Jesus." 1 Peter v. 10.

What return do you make to Almighty God for such privileges?

I heartily thank him; and I should endeavour to shew forth his praise, not only with my lips but in my life.

"That we, being delivered out of the hand of our enemies, might serve him without fear, in holiness and righteousness before him, all the days of our life." Luke i. 74, 75.

Is it necessary to continue in this state of salvation to your life's end?

Yes; for we read in Scripture, "He that endureth to the end, shall be saved." Matthew xxiv. 13.

"We are made partakers of Christ, if we hold the beginning of our confidence stedfast unto the end." Hebrews iii. 14.

"Be thou faithful unto death, and I will give thee a crown of life." Rev. ii. 10.

How may you obtain help from God, to continue in this state of salvation?

I must pray earnestly for grace, tinue Christ's faithful soldier and life's end.

that I may conservant unto my

"My son, know thou the God of thy father, and serve him with a perfect heart, and with a willing mind :—If thou seek him, he will be found of thee ; but if thou forsake him, he will cast thee off for ever." 1 Chron. xxviii. 9.
