have been suggested to his thoughts, and the Comment has been mentally composed, as he was passing rapidly through the crowded streets, or squalid alleys, of this Metropolis; while pressing engagements left him only time to muse, as he moved on, what ought to be said to the dying souls around, if leisure could have been had. He entreats, therefore, such benevolent persons as can command the time, and who may possess this Manual, to read to the Poor a little of what his heart has indited for them. The Portions of Scripture selected will also be equally useful in our Provincial Towns, and, indeed, in every Cottage of the land. Thankful will the Writer be, if he should thus speak to some hundreds of his dying fellow-sinners.

And if, peradventure, this little Volume should find its way into some of the Mansions of the Rich; if it should attend them to their inner chamber, where weariness, and sickness, and disappointments, and conscience, all remind them that this world can make no man happy; if they feel that the past is without relish, the present without rest, and the prospects of the future almost without hope to them -oh, that they also (needing as they do the very same consolations as the poorest outcast from Society) may discover that THERE IS MERCY YET! Oh, that all may taste, once and for ever, the

blessings expressed in the name of JESUS, the Saviour: whom to know, is Life Eternal!

But it is time to close these remarks. The world is too gay, or too busy, and books far too numerous, to admit any one to be heard, beyond a few moments. In these Short Addresses, my wish only is, to let fall one more drop of Mercy into an ocean of misery.

THE FAITHFUL SAYING.

1 TIMOTHY, i. 15, 16.

This is a faithful saying, and worthy of all acceptation, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners; of whom I am chief.

Howbeit, for this cause I obtained mercy, that in me first Jesus Christ might show forth all long-suffering, for a pattern to them which should hereafter believe on Him to life everlasting.

WHEN we read the Bible, it is a great comfort to know that it is all true. The Bible was given to us by God himself, who cannot lie.

The faithful saying which God has given in it, concerning his Son Jesus Christ, is the most precious that can be offered to us miserable sinners. If we had no faithful sayings, like this, we must live and die without hope. Let us welcome these glad tidings, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners!

When He came into the world, he did not come into it because it was a happy place; but because it was a miserable place, full of sin. He did not come to enjoy it; but to die for it, and that the world by Him might be saved. And whosoever

believeth in Him, shall not perish, but have everlasting life.

Do you believe in Him? Do you feel that you want a Saviour? Do you feel the burden of your sins? Do you feel like a sick man, that needs a

Physician? If you feel this, you will be ready to come to Christ, and cry out, "Lord, heal my soul; for I have sinned against thee!" And He will not cast out your prayer.

Perhaps you think yourself too great a sinner to be pardoned. But he is ready to save even the chief of sinners. The vilest may come to Him, and may remind Him of His own promise; how he said, "Him that cometh unto me, I will in no wise cast out."

save.

Many think that great sinners are the hardest to Yet these are often the first to come to Christ. And he delights in showing his Almighty power, by saving to the uttermost.

St. Paul (who before his conversion was named Saul) is a pattern to us. He was a monument of grace, set up to be looked at throughout all generations; that all may be assured of the pardoning love of Christ. As he was forgiven, so may we be.

Have you ever persecuted the godly? St. Paul had once been a persecutor. Have you hated the Gospel? Have you disliked the House of God? Have you been unkind to pious people? Have you been living after the course of this world, serving divers lusts and pleasures? Still, if you turn to God, and believe in His Son Jesus Christ,
