THE LAND.

The large pieces of land are called con'-tin-ents.

There are five continents,—

Eu-rope, A'-sia, Af'-ri-ca, A-mer'-i-ca, Aus-tra'-lia.

EUROPE, ASIA, and AFRICA form one large piece of land, and are often called "The Old World."

AMERICA is divided into two large pieces called North America and South America.

Europe is the continent in which we live.

Asia is the largest continent.

The Atlantic is the ocean nearest to us.

The Pacific is the largest ocean.

DICTATION.-LEARN TO SPELL ALL THE WORDS.-Lime is an-oth-er sub-stance we get out of the earth. In all parts of the world there are vast moun-tains of lime-stone. Some-times the stone is of a dark co-lour, at o-ther times it is very hard and white; it is then call-ed mar-ble. The dark kind is oft-en brok-en up into pieces and spread on the roads to mend them.

PARTS OF THE LAND.*

We call the parts of the land by dif-fer-ent names.

A Con'-ti-nent is one of the largest pieces of land.

Lesson 29.-Thursday Morning. Grammar. Write.
All the names of animals are nouns.

EXERCISE.-Pick out the NOUNS the NAMES OF ANIMALS.-The horse eats hay. Cows give us milk. Mary had a little lamb. Bees make honey. The donkey drinks only clean water. My dog caught a rat. Pussy is playing with a mouse. Do you see the funny monkey pulling the bird's tail? The whale is not a fish, it is an animal; it eats small fishes, and lives in the sea. The elephant is the largest animal living on the land. The finest ones are found in the forests of Ceylon, an island belonging to England. DICTATION.-LEARN TO SPELL ALL THE WORDS IN THE EXERCISE.* Lesson 30.-Friday Morning. Work these! Sums.

nearly so useful as a model or a sketch map drawn on the board, whilst the children are looking. A good teacher should aim at drawing a sketch map quickly, and with a fair degree of accuracy. The children will be interested and their attention may easily be sustained. (See Preface.)

PARTS OF THE LAND.

A Pen-in'-su-la is a piece of land with water nearly all round it.

The word Peninsula means "almost an island."

There are many small Peninsulas in the British Islands. WALES and the SOUTH WEST OF ENGLAND are Peninsulas.*

An Isth'-mus (ist'-mus) is a narrow neck of land joining two larger portions.

DICTATION.-LEARN TO SPELL ALL THE WORDS.-Chalk is

an-oth-er form of lime-stone. There are beds of chalk reach-ing from one end of Eng-land to the other, here ris-ing into hills, or break-ing off into cliffs, and there sink-ing into val-leys. Chalk was made in the sea by little insects, so small that you could scarce-ly see them, and it is still be-ing formed.

Lesson 35.-Friday Morning. Work these Sums.

(1) Multiply seventy thousand and sixty-nine by eight and ten. (2) 506,378 × 9 and 10. (3) Write out eight times tables.

Lesson 37.-Tuesday Morn. Write and Learn. Geography.

PARTS OF THE LAND.*

A Cape is a piece of land stretch-ing out into the sea.

LAND'S END in Cornwall is a cape. There are many thousand capes shown on the map. You only want to know the names of a few of them. Capes have many names, as, POINT (Lizard Point), HEAD (Beachy Head), BILL (Selsey Bill), NESS (Fife Ness), MULL (Mull of Cantire). The Coast or shore is where the land and sea meet. The COAST is generally called the sea coast.

* Use will, of course, be made by the teacher of any natural features of the land, or waters, in the neighbourhood, to illustrate these lessons, and to impress them on the children's minds.
