LECTURES ON AUTO-INTOXICATION IN DISEASE, OR SELF-POISONING OF THE INDIVIDUAL. By Ch. Bouchard, Professor of Pathology and Therapeutics; member of the Academy of Medicine and Physician to the Hospitals, Paris. Translated, with a Preface and New Chapters added, by Thomas Oliver, M. A., M. D., F. R. C. P., Professor of Physiology, University of Durham; Physician to the Royal Infirmary, New Castle-Upon-Tyne; Formerly Examiner in Medicine, Royal College of Physicians, London. Second Revised Edition. Crown Octavo, 342 pages, Extra Cloth. Price, $2.00 net. F. A. Davis Company, Publishers, 1914-16 Cherry Street, Philadelphia.

This well known work of Bouchard is the one authority on the subject of Auto-Intoxication. In every department of Medical Science the importance of a thorough understanding of the influence of bacteria and their toxines and ptomaines is now days one of the essentials. The surgeon, internist, obstetrician, and general practitioner, will find the book full of interest and extremely helpful. So many diseases whose pathology was formerly obscure are now fully explained as the result of toxaemia. Eclampsia, pernicious vomiting, hepatic insufficiency, and other disorders of pregnancy, are notable examples.

This second revised edition by Professor Oliver, has been considerably enlarged and much new material added. Two entirely new chapters have been added as an appendix by the editor in which he discussed the "Natural Defences of the Organism Against Disease," and "Auto-Intoxication of Intestinal Origin."

The growing importance of the subject of toxaemia and auto-intoxication in disease, to the medical man, demands that he keep his ideas up to date on the subject. The literature so far contains no work quite. so complete and up-to-date as this edition of Bouchard, and it is worthy of an unqualified endorsement.

CLINICAL OBSTETRICS. By Robert Jardine, M. D., Edin., M. R. C. S., Eng., F. F. P. & S., Glas., F. R. S., Edin., Professor of Midwifery in St. Mungo's College, Glasgow; Senior Physician to the Glasgow Maternity Hospital; Examiner in Midwifery to the Scotch Conjoint Board; Formerly Examiner in Midwifery to the University of Glasgow; Late President of the Glasgow Obstetrical and Gynecological Society, etc. With ninety-six illustrations and a colored plate. Second edition. Cloth, price $4.75. Rebman Company, 112 Broadway, New York.

This work of Jardine's differs from the ordinary text book on Obsetrics in that the clinical feature is given greater prominence. In connection with his discussion of the various topics, illustrative clinical reports are given to still further elucidate the subject.

In lieu of the difficulty with which the student and young practitioner obtains sufficient clinical experience in obstetrics, this clinical work of Jardine's fills a very important place and should be especially in

the hands of every inexperienced obstetrician. Jardine's experience on the staff of the Glasgow Maternity Hospital, the largest in the United Kingdom, adapts him from exceptional opportunities to speak from a clinical standpoint.

This second edition is an improvement over the first; a considerable number of interesting cases have been added and fifty new illustrations. Thirty cases are reported under the section on eclampsia illustrating the success of the author in the use of the saline infusion in treating this condition. He is enthusiastic in his recommendation of this method in treating eclampsia.

A LABORATORY MANUAL OF PHYSIOLOGICAL CHEMISTRY. By Elbert W. Rockwood, M.D., Ph.D., Professor of Chemistry and Toxicology and Head of the Department of Chemistry in the University of Iowa, etc. Second Edition, Revised and Enlarged. With one colored plate and three plates of Microscopic Preparations. Large 12mo., 229 pages, Extra Cloth. Price $1.00 net. F. A. Davis Company, Publishers, 1914 Cherry Street, Philadelphia, Pa.

Perhaps in no one branch of Medical Science in recent years have the advances been more marked than in that of physiological chemistry, and the necessity of being fully abreast with these advances to fully understand the vital processes in the human economy is obvious to all.

The laboratory method is without doubt the only practical method by whch one can become familiar with the physiological changes and their products that occur in the body.

The author in this manual has arranged a complete laboratory course that the student and practitioner may easily carry out with a small stock of apparatus and reagents. The text includes full and clear descriptions of the most important experiments, explains the facts observed with a clear interpretation of their meaning. Blank pages are inserted throughout the book for additional notes. The more complicated experiments have been omitted and the whole subject is boiled down to a practical working basis suited to the grasp of the student in class. work, or to the needs of the busy practitioner who desires to bring his knowledge on the subject up to date.
