23. (Epiphany.) GUIDING STAR, (Or Dix.) Six 7s, or III. 2. GERMAN. with glad- ness men of old Did the guiding star be - hold; with joy they hailed its light, Lead - ing on ward, beam-ing bright; So, most gracious Lord, may we Ever- more be led to thee. 2 As with joyful steps they sped 3 As they offered gifts most rare 4 Holy Jesus! every day Keep us in the narrow way; 5 In the heavenly country bright dorn - ing, Guide where our infant Re-deem - er is laid. 2 Cold on his cradle the dew-drops are shining, Low lies his head with the beasts of the stall; Angels adore him in slumber reclining, Maker and Monarch and Saviour of all. 3 Say, shall we yield him, in costly devotion, 14 Vainly we offer each ample oblation. 5 Brightest and best of the sons of the morning Dawn on our darkness, and lend us thine aid: Star of the East, the horizon adorning, Guide where our infant Redeemer is laid. 26. (after Epiphany.) Sunday. HUMILITY. C. M. (Double.) O. W. 1. When Jesus left his Father's throne, He chose an hum-ble birth; Like us, un - honored, and unknown, He came to dwell on earth. Like him may we be found below, In wis-dom's path of peace; Like him in grace and knowledge grow, As years and strength increase. 2 Sweet were his words, and kind his look, When mothers round him press'd; Their infants in his arms he took, And on his bosom bless'd. Safe from the world's alluring harms, Thus in the circle of his arms 3 When Jesus into Salem rode, The children sang around; For joy they pluck'd the palms, and strew'd Their garments on the ground. Hosanna our glad voices raise, Hosanna to our King! Should we forget our Saviour's praise, The stones themselves would sing. |
